Is there such a thing as one of these?
Whats it involve?
Maybe Ross could stock a DIY :p

You go to the doctor and ask for a liver function test, the pathologist takes some blood and does some tests , a couple of days later they call you in with a grim face, "tsk tsk this looks like you have been over using alcohol, is that true?" there is a "safe" range that your numbers need to fall into.

But make sure you abstain from alcohol for up to 48 hours before the test. Your liver can show signs of stress for a couple of days.

I once let a medical student take my blood (for him to practice) and he sent it off to the lab. I'd had a few drinks (read: many) a couple of days before and the LFTs came back abnormal. A repeat test showed no abnormality.

This also happened to a friend recently.

My old neighbour had the same story. A routine medical for his employer came back positively frightening because he had been on a bender the night before. He just calmly told the nurse to draw more blood, and it will be fine. It was. :D

I had an LFT just last week and actually had a few pots of house APA the night before. Fasted from 9PM-noon the next day, at which time they took my blood for testing.

LFT came back OK :D

The test I had, was a general liver health test whereby it came back either healthy or un-healthy. If it comes back unhealthy, you're sent back for the % of functioning and so on. I guess the downside to the general test is that it doesn't show if the liver is sluggish or full of bile (and more, I'm assuming). And at the time, I didn't know there were differing LFT's to be had.

For now, I'm just fine with a "healthy" diagnosis. I probably hit 5-7 standard drinks a night and do my damnedest to do Mon and Thurs. AFD. Having said that, I just cracked an IPA and it's Monday <_<

I reckon if you hit it hard, the night before your test it (the liver) would most certainly come up toxic. I purposefully didn't want to alter my daily intake (albeit, I did drink less than normal the night before) but yeah, just went for it and it's all good.

Thank god.

EDIT: fixed AM/PM

I'd always figured that refraining from drinking on weekdays only to hit the sauce on the weekends constituted binge drinking!? I tend to down a pint or two only on weeknights and then expand from that on the weekends. Although some days I find that i haven't had a drop at all.

Thats the theory Devo....
kinda like going to training through the week, so you are ready for the big game on the weekend...!!!

You gave blood at Midnight?, was that at Vampire Pathology Services?

I try to get a couple of AFDs on in a week, usually Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but I often find myself craving just one nice cold frosty one after a long hot day at the office.

Yep me to AFD's from Monday to Friday or Thursday depending on the work over the weekend. Good idea to sticky post the current guidelines. We all drink beyond recomendations at times (I assume) but being aware of the average healthy drinking guidlines will help members make a more informed choice when it comes to consumption.

It is always up to the individual to decide what best suits them and i am sure we all know what a guide is, informed choice is a good thing.

Enjoy

Shawn :)

When Doc checked my liver, he said: "oh man, youve been always very thirsty in your life?"
I replied: " oh no Doc, Ive never let it come to that" :p

I agree with Tangent... a healthy glass of red wine can be consumed on alcohol free days.

I'd give up watching TV - especially 60 Minutes!

Aren't they the same clowns that had an article on Breatharians a few years ago?

Breatharians - Inedia.

60 minutes gets a mention.

Living without food. *********!

After seeing the 60 mins. Show the other week on the adverse effects off excessive alcohol consumption I got to thinking about having some TIME OUT from drinking.
Steve

60 Minutes be buggered .Now had over 75 minutes without a drink. Time to start.

Anyone old enough to remember Austen Taysious. Said something like - " 60 Minutes - 18 minutes of adds and 42 minutes of ******** !"

Wednesday and Thursday off.

I don't watch 60 minutes as from memory it's 48 minutes of bullsh!t and 12 minutes of commercials. And the commercials are more factual and entertaining.

Yes, the great Billy Birmingham. But the delivery of AT, brilliant. Just brilliant.

My apologies to anyone who can't remember the 70s or Austin Taysious. Your loss.

Really you need to put it into perspective.

Once you are dead there is no more beer.

Each beer you didn't have is one less you will ever have had.

cheers

Not if the beer is the cause of your death. The ones you don't have could extend your life to have lots more.

Anyways, every day for me except 31.12
