Jim,
That dial thermometer shouldn't be used in anything that comes into contact with food or drink. It is a mercury filled system, denoted by the Hg on the dial face. If the capilliary was to fracture or leak, which they sometimes do, mercury would leak out into the wort, beer or whatever and you may not be aware.
Would be perfect for measuring room temp, fridge temp etc.
