All the horror lovers out there must be interested in this latest incarnation of the classic horror movie, The thing from another world. I remember seeing this as a kid and thinking it was pretty scary, then John Carpenter did a remake and for its time, was pretty bloody good. Now we have a new version that is a prequel to the original movie in the Norweigan base camp. Looks like a cracker, good horror flicks are few and far between these days.

I usually hate remakes (think texas chainsaw, wicker man, etc) but I loved Carpenter's thing. Adnittedly, I haven't seen the original but I also hate most carpenter movies - exceptions being thing and Escape from New York.

Any links to this prequel? Director, trailer etc?

Don't know if you would call it horror per-se, but the recent movie Red State quite floated my boat.

I also thought this 2010 release was a pretty classy B-Movie.

I wonder if I Spit On Your Grave is still banned in Queensland.

I wanted to watch any video if it had "Banned in Queensland" on the cover when I was a kid.

crap I love John Carpenter - the thing and Dark Star are awesome! Also Dave Cronenberg.

I remember that sentiment. Of course there was a period there where it didn't have to do much to be banned in Qld.

I love Carpenter by the way - complete megalomaniac, does the crappy synth soundtracks and all hahaaha. Unsure what they will do with this one other than give it a more modern look which will allow the imaginationally challenged younger generation of "you-can-tell-the-shark-isn't-real" movie goers some thrills and chills.

I must admit I haven't seen anything for a long time that has genuinely given me the heebie jeebies. The gore movies annoy me and the psuedo-psych young-guns-reimagining-slasher-flick movies irk me in a kind of moralistic way (not sure whether to blame it on age or studying ethics or having worked face to face with victims of terrible crimes for 5 years...I found the sheen came off a lot of hollywood violence when I started working with men and women who had been subject to [and perpetrated] some pretty horrendous stuff).

I think that is why I like my horror/slasher/thriller to have either a sci-fi or 'paranormal' edge. I can deal with the metaphor, but I am -sadly- not amused by middle class white male portrayals of violence as entertainment ('sadly' because it restricts my drunken Friday nights at the local video ezy, and my gf has to put up with me wildly exclaiming about all the shit that is being produced haha).

I enjoy a good ghost/poltergeist/from beyond type movie, but even that was all stitched up by Tobe Hooper a million years ago....it is hard to get genuinely excited when it is all so recycled.

The two main movies that made me shit my pants in my teens were Romero's original black and white "Night of..." (late at night on a friends 100 acre wheat farm in the middle of nowhere stoned off my tits), and then my first encounter with "Silence of the lambs" on the big screen. I was way too naive and underprepared for that movie haha.

Have you seen The Decent? That film has turned me away from thriller horror films, I saw it on the big screen and it freaked me out so much that I had to leave the cinema to go the bar. The film is based around claustrophobia in underground caves, annoying characters and bad ass ghouls.

Torture porn is boring to say the least.

I also really love sci-fi horror - Sunshine, Moon and Event Horizon stand out as some recent favs. Also really love occult horror - when the 'baddie' is so utterly evil that humans don't stand the slightest chance of survival.

My Dad took me to see "it came from beneath the sea"

Then me Mam took me to see "the long long trailer"

As a seven year old I could make no sense at all of the latter, but the first movie was quite engrossing.

Event horizon has Sam Neil in it, I believe he was in another very freaky horror movie, IIRC it was called In the mouth of madness.

Yea but these days every second movie has zombies in it. Or vampires. Or zombies that shoot vampires from their eye sockets. ****, enough of the vampire zombies, people.

Anyone seen "The Mist". ******* bleak ending, made me go '****' when the end credits rolled.

Yes, I think loosely riffing on the whole Hp Lovecraft thing... speaking of which although the books are better - 'From Beyond' and 'Re-animator' both messed with me a bit in year 10 haha....

GDAH - no haven't seen The Decent, will keep a look out...

BribieG:

JA: I loved moon but thought sunshine was a massive let down to be honest!

Last two stupidly cool b-graders for me: Dog Soldiers and Slither. Drink beer, watch them, drink beer, throw popcorn at the tv and laugh your tits off...

yeah, re-animator, that had some pretty good special effects for it's time.

Everybody reading this thread should download and watch The Human Centipede (First Sequence)

... when your wife & kids are out. It's quite hardcore B-Grade horror. A mate of mine is almost speechless a year later, if I bring it up, he just shakes his head and utters 'faark that was bent' under his breath......

Hmmm... sounds like it lives up to it's reputation then. Might be worth a look.
