I was lucky enough to score a gas powered Weber recently - as opposed to the more traditional heat bead set up - and was curious about doing a little smoking with it.
You can have the burners set really low so I was thinking I'll just set a foil tray of appropriate timber above one, place the meat on the opposite grill and see how it goes.
Though not strictly 'hot smoking' as the meat will still cook via the heat from the grill, do you guys think think I'll still get a worthwhile result?

Best get a thermometer and see how hot it really is when the burners set low. You really dont want to go over 240F (115C) at the most for hot smoking...

Actually that is hot smoking - I think you meant not exactly cold smoking? If you place the meat as far away from the heat source and keep the heat low - 100 c lid down and get good smoke it will work. You can also place an aluminum tray with water between the meat and the burner to encourage a little humidty and help with moisture etc

Go for it and you will do wel and learn the how to's.

And yes get a thermometer so as to keep an eye on temperature.

I ahve a brinkmann smoker that is gas powered, and its great no fuckign around with charcoal, can get plenty of smoke

ive got the aldi branded hark clone which is gas powered. works wonderful at about 100 to 150 degrees for smoking.
its about half the price of the harks

You can get the weber smokey mountain at specialist BBQ stores - I have been looking at them for the last couple of years but havent bought one yet. They go for $699. I will check the amazon site out as there is an 18 inch version which you can get here and a 21 inch version which Weber Australia wont bring out.
