Hi All,

I am new to the All Grain method. I put down my first batch and have had great success. I am wondering if anyone could recommend a simple Sinlge Grain and Single Hop recipe. I like Ales but will try anything. I ahve looked in th Db section but most have multiple grains and hops and because i live in the country it cost a fortune for freight hense the reason i need to minimize ingrediants.

Cheers,

Mitch

I dont have any recipes for you, but what your wanting is commonly referred to as a SMASH beer (single malt single hop). there's quite a few around. pils smash are pretty common.

im sure a few of the SMASH fans will chime in

Royal Family ESB (Mostly German Ingredients ;))
19litre
4kg Munich
50gm (30IBU) Fuggles for 60min
20gm Fuggles for 10 min
20gm Fuggles for 1 minute
Danstar Windsor Yeast

Ale malt & POR. Although a bit of crystal wouldnt go astray

If you can get base malt easily enough, you can roast some of it to make a version of specialty grain, anything from a Munich to a crystal to chocolate.

My favourite SMASH beer is Budvar, the Czech Budweiser, 100% pilsner malt, Saaz to 37 IBU, just a bittering addition. My dream is to be that good a brewer

As for an Ale try "Marston's Single Malt" 100% Golden Promise, at a guess bittered to about 30 IBU with something neutral, I would try Target, a bit of late kettle hop, EKG or Brambling would fit the bill, but go easy say g/L let the lovely GP flavour have room to show.

Multiple grain recipe orders shouldn't cost any more than one grain orders.
My last partial brew I ordered all the different grains from CraftBrewer, they cracked them all and packaged it in the one airtight bag, sweet as. All weighed up, combined ready to mash.
Until I get my own grain mill and buy grains uncracked in bulk this will be my best option.

Fair call.
The hop character in that beer is outstanding!
Do they really only make one hop addition?

Coopers pale ale clone http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/inde...&recipe=483
Its not a single grain recipe but it only uses a litte wheat, and some of the gravity comes from cane sugar so you won't have to frieght it in. And you can get the coopers yeast at the bottlo.

I make this recipe all the time because it is cheap and easy to make, and i really enjoy drinking it, which is the main thing.

If you buy enough ingredients for a double batch from craftbrewer it will be

7kg bb ale malt $21
400g wheat malt $1.60
90g POR flowers $7

PLus stuff not from craftbrewer

Sugar $2 ?
Yeast Free from the bottom of a coopers pale ale tallie, plus you get a sweet bottle to use
total $31.6
per batch $13.55 (you only use 28g of flowers per batch so have some left over)
Per carton $5.42 :)

I can't remember exactly but i think postage is about $12.9 once you get over 5 kg and can select courier service. Still, 12.90 only adds $2.58 to your carton price. I love working out how much homebrew costs per carton :)

If you can get in on a bulk buy then your cost will come right down too.

21L of Beer.

4kg Pale Malt (63C for 90 minutes)
30g PoR for 60 minutes
S189 @ 12-14C

Made from Beer.

Hard to go wrong with 5-6 kg pale malt, 500g medium crystal and single bittering addition with UK hops (maybe EKG or fuggles) to 30-35 IBU.

Not quite a smash but pretty simple and pretty damn tasty. Those weights are for a 20-23 litre batch and are general, not system specific. Convert to percentages if you need to.

If you can use a good UK liquid yeast, all the better. WY 1099, 1187, and 1318 are all good. You can reculture/farm so that gives less ordering to do from lhbs (although as others have said, transit costs are often pretty cheap from the right supplier. Boagsy suggested Craftbrewer. Craftbrewer is based in QLD. Boagsy is in Tasmania.)
