Simple Coopers Lager Query

Just putting through a simple kit & kilo Coopers lager - kit yeast - dextrose (which instructs fermentation should be at 23*C) however lagers are traditionally fermented at lower temps. With the supplied kit yeast - which temp should i ferment at? Can the supplied yeast actually do its thing at say 13*C?

Also, is there any point going to secondary with such a simple recipe? If so, at what temp?

So basically wondering if the Coopers kit ingredients are prepared esecially for fermentation at 23*C, or it's just the same little instruction booklet in every coopers kit giving the same general guidlines which cover all their brews...

Shoot me if this has been asked a million times before... couldn't find in search.
 
I will probably get shunned for this, but I still use CL regularly. For the price, plus a little extra, I get an absolutely beautiful beer.

I add 500g LDME to the Can in a large pot +~1/2Litre water.
Simmer the malt mix for 20-25mins with a bittering hop (Northern Brewers or POR ~20g) then turn off and add ~15g of an aromatic (Hallertau or Australian Cluster). Also 700g Dextrose and 100 -200g Maltodextrose.

I LOVE IT!!

Also I brewed upto that ToC over the summer and it was fine.

Just MHO. Im sure a few AG'ers are gagging, but it really turned out tops!

Welcome stonersloth, where ya from.
The basic coopers lager kits come with an ale yeast I think you will find, so the 23*C in the booklet will be fine.
The superior coopers kits have a different yeast, but when you get a bit more serious, you will start to find that rather than use the supplied yeast, under the lid, and not temperature controlled, you will go to using a better yeast, either a Saf*** dried yeast or a liquid variety.
As for secondary or not, read this thread, and make up your own mind.

formerly from melbs, but typing to you live from the far-off land of few brew shops and even fewer drinkable drops: finland - hence the reason i'm confined to the use of the coopers lager kit (which is imported by the local supermarket chain). it's either that or a local rye extract which reallys makes the the tastebuds cringe.

sent coopers an email - confirmed it was an ale yeast.

unknown breed of hops grows naturally of the side of the house - will be putting that to use at the end of the finnish summer (august). until then, ....
 
Best bet would be to try and find a online brew shop in Europe that does mail orders, and get their catalog.
You shouldn't have any problems doing lager's in winter :blink:

Sheer Luxury... Imagine buying a house that had it's own supply of hops growing down the side!!

Last place I bought came with a rampant supply of Bindii :(

Pity the rampant suppy of Bindii, wasn't Bindi, would have had a good brewing companion :p :huh:
