My GF was telling me all about her new interest in rhizomes after watching that on last week's Gardening Australia.

Hops are DEFINITELY a rhizome that presents a risk of spreading, and could potentially be divided like that, although the hop-specific methods will probably increase the amount you can get from a single plant.
