Quick Suggestions - Which Hops

Hi All,

Was reading some old threads and learned that I could apply hops to a brew when I transfer to the secondry.

Well, tonight I was intending to rack a Black Rock Pilsner which has been in stage one for the last 7 days. I wanted to chuck hops in at the start, but it was an emergency brew that happened late at night and I didn't have any hops handy.

I have the oppurtunity to race down to a brew shop and pick some up before I rack tongight - my question is, what will go nicely with the Pilsner?

Any suggestions welcome - I have to leave in about an hour or so!

agree :) SAAZ for sure , Hallertau Hersbrucker.

:spelling, now back to the sparge.
 
Either - they're all wonderful mmmmmm hops! See what the shops got. Although some people say dry hopping with saaz gives it a grassy taste which ive never experienced when doing it?

MVZoom,

Don't use Saaz pellets - tend to give a grassy taste.

my 2 choices would be either Saaz plugs or NZ Hallertau Aroma pellets (awesome aroma). Either way, make sure the hops are fresh - if you can't smell a pleasent aroma off them or they are brown in colour - don't use.

Steve - thanks for the advice mate, it's a convertable, so all good there :beer:

Ross - My age dictates that patience is something I'd expect to experiance in the coming years. Right now it's all 'right here, right now!!'. I'll certainly order some off you in the future - however this batch has all been on a wing and a prayer, so I'd like to keep the consistant lack of planning through to the end! Can you pls send me a pricelist ([email protected])?

I ended up buying the steepable 'green' bags from Dave's Homebrew in Nth Sydney. Bought a few, the Saaz, a Hallertau and a couple I can't pronounce. Totally appreciate that this sort of offering won't give the same result as a more fresh hop.

Hey, you never know - it might taste fantastic!

Patience grasshopper.. you must learn PATIENCE!

Were you planning on using all the different hop varieties at once? Its a bit like mixing all the different colour paints together - you expect something really colourful but all you end up with is brown (you can tell I've got young kids can't you). Stick with one variety (I would go with the saaz) otherwise you will end up with the flavour equivalent of brown.

When you can snatch a pebble from the hand of an old blind man you are ready to brew...

Heh, heh - nope, I understand enough to know that one packet will suffice. I have a cooking background, this brewing stuff is just the same - with a little further chemistry and physics - kinda like baking!

I'll use the Saaz (will follow Ross' advice regarding smell).

I would stick away from the saaz pellets, I always had troubles with the grassy taste. I love tettang if I were to use pellets but if you had plugs saaz would be the way to go.

I don't mnormally add any aroma hops to my pils/lagers though unless I'm in the mood to make a super hopped bohemien pils then I add heaps and ages for months...

One thing to note with the grassy flavours, I only ever used australia saaz when I was dry hopping them, I have never tried dry hopping czech saaz as I was scared off from the aussie saaz.

Maybe only aussie saaz produce the grassy flavour..?
 
dunno slugger - I use american stirling (apparently its the US's saaz equivalent) and havent had the grassy taste.

No cascade suggestions?

Last 2 kegs ive dry hopped cascade...mmmmm :chug:

The downside is keg seems to empty alot quicker :lol:
 
well I tipped the Saaz hops in last night. When I opened the packet and steeped, they had a really nice fruity / fresh aroma - I look forward to drinking the results. I did however also note that the aroma (when steeping) could smell a bit like old cut grass - but maybe that's just the power of suggestion coming through?

Have also ordered some Cascase, Saaz and others from Ross, so look forward to using them in further brews.

It's a whole new world...!
