Nothing beats the mega schnitzels at the two Earls in Adelaide...

The Earl of Leicester is great, possibly bigger schnitzels but not quite the range of toppings of the Earl of Aberdeen aka Coopers Alehouse.

The Kilpatrick, with bacon, ham, cheese, kilpatrick sauce... not a complete meal without the customary pint of Vintage Ale alongside :)

Actually the best and probably cheapest pub eatin' (but by no means the healthiest) in the world is in the Czech Republic.

My fave is veprova pecene, bramborove knedliky and zeli (roast pork, potato dumplings and cabbage). Mandatory it be chased down with at least 4 pints of PU, Budvar, Bernard or Krusovice to aid digestion.

Also if the pan juice from the veprova pecene isn't poured all over your knedliky (uncommon) send it back.

Pffffffft way too small, and too much coloured ****! :)

Pork with crackling. Breakfast or dinner, summer or winter. These two are favourites from the Lowenbrau:

Knuspriger Schweinebauch
Crackling Roast Pork Belly with Lwenbru Bier Sauce,
Sauted Potatoes & Red Cabbage

Schweinshaxn
Oven Roasted Pork Knuckle with Sauerkraut,
Lwenbru Bier and Mashed Potato

I love a good pizza and a burger. Easy in concept, but both require a craftsman to get them right. Much like good beer I guess.

When next you find yourself in Vancouver, check out Dix brewpub downtown. Awesome IPA and most of their grub comes from a huge bbq. Smokey pulled pork is to die for.

Dig I spent 5 months working in Vancover and at least 4 nights a week at the Dix. Got to know the brewer Tony quite well and ended up doing a brew with him - nice little brewery. I also got to know...well all of them when you spend so much time there. I loved there menu as it was pure BBQ! They had there own smoker in the kitchen which pumped smoked ribs, smoked chicken and my favourite smoked briskett - pull apart tender, spicy, smokey delicious. I have developed my own version here in Aus and made it at a couple of butchers for some beer food matching dinners I have held as well as a charity event where it was matched with some Matilda Bay pils.

I have some delis who want to buy it but I cant find anyone who will make it with out ripping me off - you know the little guy trying to start out so we will charge him top dollar scenario!!

Anyway anyone out there with a commercial smoker pm me! It is a great beer snack.

The Electric Light Hotel on Grenfell St in Adelaide does an awesome range of wood oven pizzas. Superb dough, light and not stodgey at all.

With Coopers Dark Ale on tap you'll find me there for lunch on most Friday's, tucked up in front of the fire place sipping a pint of cooper's dark...

Hey Paul, try to track down Dave Kasmaroski. He used to run the Eumundi Smokehouse in Dulwich Hill. Legenary meat smoker and top bloke. His smoked chilli biersticks are insane.

WA pub cuisine leaves much to be desired. It's all burgers, wedges, and a steak if you're feeling fancy. Throw in a token chicken dish for the ladies, and some deef fried frozen fish fillets for the vegos (serious!).

There are some obvious upmarket examples who do things better, but largely pubs seem to have never had accommodation, hence small kitchens, hence only a grill and deep fryer.

It's slightly better out in the country

I agree, there is either so called gastropub's or pubs... some of the food you mention above is actually demanded by customers. You would be surprised at home many people dont even pick up a menu and ask for wedges... Sorry we dont have wedges, SHOCK... There are some establishements that still do care! Not everything is deep fried and comes out of bag!

When ever I am in Fremantle I always head down to Little Creatures for an Ale or three and a snack - mussels, Tapas, wood fired pizza I reckon they do it all very well.

dig I know Dave, did a story on him for my food show, good guy great product! Thanks for the nudge.

All this pub food talk just gets makes me hungry for the $10 steak deal which i go to every thursday. Now that is a nice feed...

I agree!!! What I like about Creatures (other then the obvious) they have never pretended to be a gastro pub they have kept it simple and do it very very well. There white wine and pernod mussels are fantastic... great pizzas... and lets not forget the beer!!!
reasonably priced to! and I live down the road! cheap taxi!

Wifey and I are heading to LC for beers and dinner tonight as luck should have it.

All of the above (except lambs fry)! And another vote for RIBS.

Second (or was that third) Kilpatrick schnitty whenever I can get it. Also love a good pub fave that hasnt been mentioned yet in Salt and Pepper Squid. It can be done horribly, but when its good, its GOOD!

Anyone whom hasnt ventured to the ASTOR hotel in Adelaide should give it a crack. S&P squid for $10 is a winner with a Paley on a Friday afternoon.

If you're in Morley it's not too far to go to my locals, The Mighty Quinn in Tuart Hill and the Paddo in Mt Hawthorn. Haven't had a meal at the Paddo for ages, but they have a decent kitchen and function/dining room. The Mighty Quinn serves pretty cheap food with big serves and decent variety.
edit: Wed is $13 steak night, but it's not as large as the regular priced nights obviously. Place does a roaring trade with food and you often need to book a table. I usually go there on a summers sunday for the $26 seafood platter, or the cheap $15 roast dinner in winter when I have some money.

pablo: I've spent many a happy night at the mighty quinn. The place lacks atmosphere, but that's part of the charm, it's like an ordinary pub that isn't trying too hard. Good food, yours usual selection of Irish/British beers at good prices (pint of the month is usually $5).

I've never eaten at the Paddo, but have been there quite a few times for a drink.

Yeah the place used to be a supa value shop (edit: or charlie carters or something, some type of supermarket anyway), so they've done what they could with it. Atmosphere is pretty good because the staff that work there are friendly. I mainly go there on a sunday evening though, so can't complain about atmosphere, the place is very busy and they have the live accoustic irish music.
