Fergi,

Malt extract is very prone to furry mould or mould of any type for that matter.

I had the same prob with my coopers fermenter.

i found the lip of the bucket was not level, it sat high where the seam is
on both sides. i fixed it with a file then some fine sandpaper. all's fine now.

Had the same prob with 2 of my fermenters (not coopers).
It usually involves the different halves of the plastic molding not lining up.
Took to them with a large, very sharp woodplane. You get a lot cleaner cut than sandpaper - nasties hide in scratches however small.

Never had sealing problems with the bucket types. Easier to clean too.

If you have not long ago purchased a Coopers kit and the lid doesn't seal properly you can contact them and let them know. I did this and they sent another proper sealing fermenter out.
Having said that. It doesn't really matter if the seal isn't proper. I have transferred to secondary and let sit for over a week in the non sealing fermenter many times and have not had a problem yet.

cheers
