All,
I had the good fortune to try a few Pigs Fly Pale Ales at my brother - in - law's wedding in Mittagong.

I immediately thought it would be a beer I would try to have a crack at cloning.

The good brewers at Pigs Fly have a tasting note for the PFPA, which gives a fair idea of the schedule.

A copy is attached (I hope) to this post.

Here is my attempt at a clone. Comments please.

Thanks for that UF. I occasionally buy a six pack from my local liquor
Steve

I'm not too sure about the 500g of Carapils. Thinking of maybe dropping that back to 200g, and adding another 500g of either Ale or maybe Pilsner malt ???

Fess.

I remember drinking one of these before and now I wish I remembered it. The time I drank it I had already consumed enough beer for 15 men
Anyway what you have there looks pretty nice so i'd go with it and work on it from there.

Did you end up having a crack at this one Uncle Fester?

Maybe :D

From my memory of the orginal it tastes pretty close. Will do a side-by side blind test this weekend.

Any reports on how this one came back..

This beer is one of my favourte session beers.

I think I should have a crack at it myself.....

To quote the great Rex Hunt...

Maaaaagnificent! Gave it to another brewer who thought it one of the best beers he had ever tried

I rated it an equal with the Nelson Sauvin Ale.

Have a dip and let me know.

Steve, were you game?

Cheers,

Fester.

I am still floundering in extracts at the moment.

What sort of concentrated wort do you think would be suit this style of beer.
some sort of unhopped ale??? and some LME?

The hops and yeast specifics should not be a problem.

Hi Fester

Did you decide with carapils?

Your best bet would be just some light LME or DME with a little steeped carapils and crystal. Say 250g carapils and 100g crystal.

They will be made using a plain ale malt I would guess, and vienna and golden promise both bring different characters, but it will be your best bet I think.

One of the morgans tins might help, they list what base grains are used in them so you could look at that to get some ideas...

That sounds like a really good starting point... Ill give that, or something very similar a try.

Thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure , from speaking to the brewers, that this beer is a hell olf a lot simpler than you've got recipe wise. I think it's just pils, 5% crystal, chinook for bittering then an arse load of Cascades for aroma. Simple and easy, great tasting brew too.

As previously stated, I'm lazy. Easier is better!

Will have to give the simpler version a go. Their flyer indicates "Pale" malt, which I construed as Ale malt.

Will place this one on the "To Do" list. Unfortunately the to do list grows faster than the "Done" list :p

I'll print this out and give it a go. I made something similar last weekend. Had another six pack of this last night - very nice.
