Am thinking of running a double size batch of my snpa clone and fermenting one half 'warm' as usual, and the second half cold with saflager s-23.
Then condition both in keg for a month, warm-warm and lager the cold fermented.
Any ideas what what the lager would come out like?
 
I recently did something similar. Brewed a Nelson Sauvin Summer "ale" and fermented with Cal Lager 2112 yeast. It's just been bottled, so nothing concrete yet, but from the Hydro samples, the hops seem to overpower any sort of character you'd get out of the lager yeast. Basically, it tasted fairly similar to the recipes I'd brewed previously using US56/05. Will reserve judgment fully till it's carbed up though.

That being said, give it a go. Not sure how highly hopped your recipe is, but you'll still get beer, and might get something really tasty!

The point of using lager yeast ? As in all things commercial, if in doubt, tick cost.

Using lower fermenation temps yeast produces less in the way of esters and fermentation derived flavours/aromas, so less hops required.

Ales are more of a balancing act, balancing fermentable/nonfermentable flavour/aroma contributions and hop bitterness with flavours/aromas produced by fermentation/yeast strain.

Experimentation is a great learning exercise, to my mind an APA wouldn't be the best choice for such a test. Something a little more delicate possibly.
 
You would be supprised at the amount of commercial "ales" that use lager yeast. Basically, if you want a clean tasting beer that doesn't have alot of yeast fruitiness, it will work.

I recon it will work in a SNPA clone. At the end of the day the APA yeasts, like the WLP001 and US56 are very clean fermenters that give lager like results. Just easier to ferment than a traditional lager yeast at home.

That said if you use a lager yeast, choose a strain that produces little to no sulfur.
