Where in Sydney can you get Orthophosphoric acid suitable for brewing etc.
Getting a bit tired of importing it from Grumpy's B)

i got mine from the county brewer

My missus works for an orthodontist i have never heard of this stuff before, im assuming its a steriliser? Maybe i should see if she can get some, do i need a certain % of Orthophosphoric or.....?

Edit just checked www.brewiki.org read all about Orthophosphoric acid, now i want some too :)

Hopsta, once you try it you wont want to go back to anything else. I read on this here forum that 86% is the go, will try the coutry brewer but was thinking more of a bulk purchase

Well if my missus cant get some maybe my mum can, they both work at orthodontists!
I'll ask and let you know :)

Hopsta: Yes, orthodontists use it for etching, we use it for sanitising. I'd hope they don't use it for sterilising as it would do a dodgy job :)

Sanitising is the removal of >99% of nasties, sterilisation is the removal of every nasty. For homebrewing purposes, sanitisation is ample.

Orthophosphoric acid is a no-rinse sanitiser, I just add a squirt to a few litres of water and rinse all my equipment/bottles in it AFTER washing any solid debris off of it.

Grumpys is Great but if you cannot source Phosphoric acid anywhere closer you haven't done your research.
Most home brew shops stock it.
Try ESB

Research has been done http://www.esbeer.com.au/category41_1.htm
don't see it here. Have asked every brew shop I have been into in NSW(except COuntry Brewer which I haven't tried for a couple of years), and thats a few. No go.
Sure you can get Iodophor anywhere but I can taste it whenever I've used it and in others beers so I don't like the stuff.
No problems with Grumpy's just sick of "importing" it from interstate, what with freight and having to find time to go to the post office to pick up the package etc etc.
Bulk buy of 20 litres sounds like the go, now to find a Dairy Supplier in Sydney

You can taste Iodophor? You must be sensitive to it, never had a problem with it at all even when i sterilise bottles with it and forget to rinse it properly...

if you manage to find 20L drums of phosphoric i'll grab some from you

You could ring grumps and ask them how much they will send in one batch. I imported a couple of litres from Grumpys a while back. Lasts for ages.

I got 20L of "Eliminate" from the local Dasco distributor for about $115. It is another Dairy industry acidic no-rinse sanatiser.

Dasco has a warehouse in the Hunter Valley (02) 6571-4333 - Holiday time project I think.

Has anyone investigated some of the Hydroponics suppliers in Sydney?

Phosphoric acid is used for adjusting the pH of hydroponic nutrient solutions, and it will be food-grade from these suppliers.

Not sure if Accent hydroponics is still doing business in Revesby, but it's worth a shot.
