ok i scored half a kg of whole flowers these and was looking at the description and here is what it said
Used for first addition bittering this hop has no pretence at substitution for noble type. A kettle variety of the highest order Southern Cross imparts a soft bitterness with a subtle resinous quality. The essential oil component is such that it can deliver a delicate balance of citrus and spice when added toward the end of boil. Generally selected for its consistency in mainstream Lagers this hop has also ventured into the craft market as a reliable Brewpub mainstay.
here is my question who has used it and in what as im after some suggestions for the use of it
cheers barls

Use it anywhere you'd use a German noble hop. Fairly similar to Hallertau. The AAUs give you great mileage, yet the aroma is really delicate.

Love it. :)

The first time I tried it is still my lasting impression of it. It was like a noble hop that I couldn't quite place. I like using it in aussie ales, not quite solely for the name.

USed it and love it.

USed it 100% bittering in a 1.103 Bubbelbock. ..... great!

Used it as bittering in Golden ales and its smooth with a great lemon like citrus character that is subtle and enjoyable.

Used it to bitter and partly flavour and aroma hop the Sheep Shagger along with 3 or 4 other NZ hops and i love all of them.

I recon it wouldnt go astray used 100% as a single hop adition to a german Pils, Bittering in about anything but IPA or perhaps a wheat beer would all work.

Just had a go with Pacific Jade which is suposed to have the same smooth bittering qualities so will report back on that too. Smells tops while it bubbles away.

cheers

Hey Tony

Recently tried Pacific Jade and found it a bit disappointing. :(

To me it's bitterness is good but the aroma is a bit "nothing" if that makes any sense. Could well have been the beer itself. YMMV

+ 1 for Kai's suggestion of SC and Aussie Ales. Would be a happy medium.

Certainly looks like a promising hop. After I get through my current stock of bittering hops (could take a while) I plan to try some. Could be a good hop for bittering as well as late in an Aussie Ale. Certainly has me curious.

Agree totally here.

Have used it twice this year and it reminds me of a noble hop with a twist. Great for bittering, flavour or aroma IMHO.
I brewed an Ale with 100% Southern Cross throughout and it was pretty nice.
Have tasted some of Jazmans lagers brewed with this hop as well and they were great.

Yep, another great hop from N.Z.
Made a nice single hoppy blonde cream ale with touch of noble / lemon to it.

Working my way thru it now and quite popular.
I am looking forward to using it in a steam beer and lager this winter (looks like it is here early).

:icon_offtopic: but hard to get out of bed today after a couple of weeks away from the computer.
As a rule I start my lagers with the first snow of the season but that was overnight down to 1400 mtrs....
Its not even April and I still have a Hefe in the keg.

I just received my order of this hop (on warrens suggestion) and looking forward to brewing with it in the coming winter.

Two big thumbs from me for this hop - it has been my bittering hop of choice for the past year or so. As others have stated its no slouch in the aroma/flavour department either. I just love the smell of them dry, before they even get near the wort.

To my taste, they work wonderfully well in combination with B Saaz flowers. Try a hop-burst APA with Southern Cross and B Saaz :icon_drool2:

If I were to ever indulge in a sexual pleasure with a hop, it would be Southern Cross.

Every now and again a thread on this forum cross the line into too much information / bad mental pictures...
We just got there ;) :D
Actually it happens fairly frequently really...

Maybe there is a call for a homebrewer's version of the Aussie cricket team chant...

Beneath a wattle tree I stand, a glass of Southern Cross pale ale in my hand...
And so on...

I couldn't be bothered looking up the words to paraphrase the rest but you get the idea.
I do like these NZ hops too, a lot, just perhaps not as much as some ;)

Zoddy...please don't EVER try Hallertau Pacific. I like them far too much.....it would be a shame to have to burn them all...

Dom I'll take the soiled ones off your hands. I don't care what Zoddy's been doing with them.

Edit: Maybe no dry hopping.
