I'm just returning to brewing after gewtting fed up with the kit & kilo method and stopping for ages. I'm attempting extract brewing and much prefer working with dry ingredients. My question is is "malt" that you can get from homebrew shops the same as "malt extract" or are they two different beasts??

Cheers!

Yes, the "malt" in powder form in the 500g or 1kg bags in homebrew shops is in fact malt extract - dry malt extract - DME.

The liquid varieties are usually 80% malt 20% water so you do need to make allowances for this if you're using LDME (light dry malt extract) with a LME (liquid malt extract) recipe. But that aside they are interchangeable.

I have found when working with dry ingredients alone even a light boil is benificial
Better luck this time
