A mate of mine who is a sheet metal worker and industrial lagger was eyeing off my esky mash tun a while ago and asking why the mash needed to be insulated... After a brief description of the mashing process, he took a look at a keg (kindly manicured by spoonta off AHB) I had lying around which I was just going to insultae with camping mate.

He decided to insulate with 1200' rated insulation and then make a sleeve to wrap around the whole thing. The bottom of the keg is insulated too and supported with a frame inside to add stability with the weight of the mash. All the seams are sealed with silicon.

I'm using a glass lid which I will insulate with camping mat and the hole for the tap that I butchered will have a plate crafted over to hide my mess ;)

I did a run during the week and the mash held temp beautifully for 90 minutes on a cold night. Obviously, it adds a bit of extra weight, but all in all, it's awesome.

Any way, he's a very crafty bugger and this is what he came up with-

When funds allow, this will be married as a two-tier set up with a pump and controller....

edit- I cut my toenails for the pic, so bugger off!

Looks good john! When you doing your first batch in it? Just finished moving house and itching to put a brew down.

when do yo want a frame fabed mate give me a yell

Straight porn brother.

I know bizier, I have been trying to make him watch that shit for years now.... He says it doesn't seem right....

Love his gay stuff tho...

OT: FARKING KILLER looking piece of kit there bro! That thing would hold temp for days I reckon!

Are you gonna/planning on painting it? I reckon it would be rad with that rubber spray stuff!

:icon_cheers:

Jyo, you should kit it out with rhinestones and a candelabra to look like Liberace.

Guys, don't judge. :icon_cheers:

My mate has to take all the credit. Yeah, cocko, the bottom is getting scratched already, so I reckon your paint option is the go, mate.

Hello Kitty theme???

Not one to judge brother!

How about fitting feet to the bottom bro? Simple rubber ones, screw up the guts? OR a ring of rubber?

Also, painting it with that rubbery paint, have no idea what its called, sort of like a car under body paint, where its chucky bits of rubber?? Would be so awesome...... OR, yeah sure, Hello kitty - at least it will match your bedroom.

And I thought that my reflective insulation from clark rubber was good....

Damn man this is what I call "next level insulation"

Great job!

Cheers, blokes. I wish I had made it.

Just about to mash in again right now! I reckon the rubber stoppers underneath would be the go, but I am interested in this rubber paint you speak of, cocko. If it comes in pink, I'm there, mate.

Great job there.
I did something similar using a 60lt stockpot inside a 80lt stockpot and filled the void with foam fill. It works well on doubles but looses a little more heat on singles, particularly when I forget to pop the insulation on the lid.

yeah latex paint is awesome...gets caught in ya chest hair (if you ladymen have any) but you can make yourself into batman in under 38 minutes

You'll be smashing out some 'award' winning beers with this surely?

Ah nice mate! You will be able to do the hammer head IIPA in it. :)
