Want to give AG a go and built a Mash Tun on the weekend.
All sorced from my second home Bunnings.
Ball valve $13, Braided hose $7, water tank connection $6, Eski $30 from Coles on special.

Was stoked with the ball valve as I couldnt get them that cheap on ebay....

Water tested, no leaks. Reday for some AG this week.... Woo Hoo!

I agree. Photo's, or it never happened ;)

Curious though, when did you buy the Esky from Coles, and how much? Just went to my local Coles at lunchtime, and all they had was 25lt jobbies for ~$48. Not a bargain in my book.

Keep your eye open for when rays outdoors do sales on their 38L rubbermaid* coolers. They drop from $79 to $50 bucks~.

Or you could just go out and get one of these for $79! but you might need to fashion a hole for a bulkhead

Or this combo for $90 bucks and have an esky available for your travels!

*not rubbermaid, some cheap brand but it does the same job!

I know the big green shed always has sales on coolers but they are usually the 200L ones for 150 odd clams.

Yes, while I do drool every time I go past them, I don't really see a need for making 150lt+ batches any time soon. My liver thanks me for that :)

Will keep an eye out for sales time at Ray's. My current 25lt esky is fine, as I drain before batch sparge. But I figure I'll want to do something high gravity sooner or later.

Go to Kmart. I found the exact same willow brand esky for $29, not on special, just the regular price.....

I have been using one of Ray's 38L cooler for a year now. They are pretty good, except I find I lose at least 2 degrees and hour, compared to only 1 degree per hour with my square esky. Does anyone else have this problem? How have you fixed it?

Cheers,

Michael

I filled the lid with expanda foam and i dump my strike liquor over temp by 5 degrees~ and close up for 5 mins.. it usually drops to my dough in temp by then and mash away. I lose around 1 deg~ this way.

i have the same 38l cooler i haven't filled the lid but what i do is put some hot water in the tun to preheat it before i use it and then use the standard strike water temp calcs and i only loose about 1 deg over the hour but i would worry about 2 as most of the conversion is done well before the hour.

+1 (expanda foam ) I only lose .5 over an hour, but I warm mine up with 5 litres of strike water for 5 minutes, tip that out, then pour in my mash water.

I do this with mine 38L as well and it seems to work well at helping to hold the mash temp for the hour.
