I was down the local foodland tonight and spotted a couple of jars of molasses, so I grab myself a jar. I read a couple of years ago something about using molasses in brewing, but can't remeber what styles etc. Does anyone have any ideas of what beer styles its used in or have any experiences they want to share or even a good recipe or two wouldn't go astray, any help is good help.

Cheers

im no expert (by any stretch of the imagination), but im gonna guess that its gonna be your darker beers.

Depends on the origin of your readings on using molasses as I understand it's not the same thing in Oz/US/UK. For example, molasses to some other country would be treacle to us. Treacle in moderation adds a nice caramel note to beer in my experience but I find Oz molasses too strong in flavour to use, except maybe in a stout or porter.

Cheers, Andrew.

edit : added the stout/porter qualification.

I don't know if there is any traditional styles that call for it's use but one of my many planned beers is going to be pirate stout which will be using a hefty dose of molasses in addition to the regular fermentables. Might also age some on dark rum soaked oak chips for some extra piratey goodness.

Yeah started going through one of my books which was an Oz it had an Old Peculiar recipe which calls for 30g of molasses. It also says molasses has a very destinctive flavour. sounds like I have to work out what to try with it.
