Hi all. Started a new kit brew 3 days ago with my US 05 yeast as suggested by somebody last week. Everything looked and seemed fine but my airlock slowly stopped bubbling on day 2. Just realised now that the lid wasn't quite tight. Got another 1/4 turn out of it and airlock bubbling away nicely. Any damage done? Krausen looks nice. Smells nice. Cheers.

nah mate - i don't use an airlock.. I just take the rubber seal out of my lid and screw on. Allows c02 to escape and nothing can get it... so you're sweet no harm done.

Nope, no harm done at all.

I just ignore my air locks these days, never seen one bubble on my FV only ever on the demijohns.

They can be a bastard to get off at times. Once I was struggling with one in the kitchen( fermenter that is) and slipped, lid came off and sprayed trubb and **** from one end of the kitchen to the other. Got it cleaned up before "the leader of the opposition" got home so all was well. Now I lube with a tad of silicone spray( fermenter that is) no dramas.

Nice. Thanks for the info. Leader of the opposition!! Pisser. I'm using that one from now on. So when you say no air lock. You mean you have a solid lid. No hole and grommet?

What's a lid ?? What's an airlock ??

Haven't used one in years.

I use the rubber seal to hold down a double layer of clingwrap instead.

Hey vin. I might try that silicone spray on the leader of the oppositions hole and grommet?! Ha ha

Attached pic: Open fermentation vessels (approx 3x2metre ea) in a central Prague micro/restaurant 2013. Employee stands to the side with a clipboard and counts bubbles for 60 seconds once an hour. Looked like a manic symphony conductor...

I love the airlock. I tape the lid to the fermenter just so I can see it bubble. NOT seeing it bubble is over rated

I run boiling water over the lid seal just before screwing down. Softens the seal and allows you to get it down tight for a good seal.

I like to count the bubbles every day and see how the brew is going.

Getting the lid off can be tricky though, usually jam my foot against the tap and wedge the FV into a corner.
I'm waiting for a tap to fail when doing this, but so far no failures.

Cheers

That poor bloke was getting pranked on his first day, surely? Gravity readings would be several orders of magnitude more accurate for determining the brew's progress.

Me too robbo. Just waiting for the bloody thing to snap and piss out all my brew:)

And thylacine. That's very impressive. No lids there

I like to count the bubbles each day. Easy way to judge how the brew is progressing without taking SG readings all the time.

I knew an eskimo chap once. The man was a pervert. He had a rubber seal. I digress, lids or cling film blah blah blah. I do like an air-lock singing away or maybe 4 part harmonies. The proof of the beer is in the drinking.

Hey vin, was that the same Eskimo who's mechanic told him he'd blown a seal. Only for him to reply. Nah mate it's just a bit of snow on me beard?

If you ever get a stuck lid try wrapping a leather belt around the lid, back through the buckle and pull the tag backwards to undo it. I can't remember who told me that trick but it works a treat.
