Getting the lid off can be tricky though, usually jam my foot against the tap and wedge the FV into a corner.
I'm waiting for a tap to fail when doing this, but so far no failures.

Bugger you all, I'm a proponent of the airlock and lid. The gentle bubbling is the sound of alcohol being created, and is somewhat magical.
That said I haven't managed to form a good seal in about 4 brews so the airlock doesn't get much action.

I've resorted to gravity checks, visual inspection of the krausen and taste sampling. All too scientific if you ask me.
