I wonder if we'd oppose conical fermenters so much if they were $50 each? Just a thought.

Personally, if I had nearly $800 to spend on my brewery, I wouldn't be spending it on hardware that might give me better access to a yeast cake and little else.

Then again, if you've got everything (including a better-half who approves $800 purchases for the brewery) go ahead! Grain & Grape (Melbs) still have the same plastic conical mounted in the window that they've had for years. It's about $700 from memory. Here's a link to their stainless one (27L)

I had a longer post typed out pleading you not to buy a conical. I have fried that (as per the current post) and ask why?

Why buy a conical that is finding dis-favour in professional circles overseas? Why buy a fermenter that encourages yeast autolysis? Why buy a fermenter where you cannot crop Ale yeast from the top? Why buy a fermenter that without double or tri- zone chilling will not work properly?

Best bet is to buy a nice dish bottomed fermenter (like a 30l plastic drum), brew and then filter beer (buy a filter from Ross et al) to cellar tank (cube?) if your hell bent on things. A conical will not bring you any better beer, and is much more expensive.

Sorry, hate the things!

Scotty

I don't agree with everything Scotty says on this matter for CCV's in a proffesional enviroment (although there are many very good points in what he is saying) as it is a matter that relates to styles produced and how the tanks are used/managed and set up, But I do think that they are a waste of money on the home level.
In the pro brewery they are a help in storage management .... at home I can't see much of an advantage without having mutiples. That being said one would look sexy in my garage :icon_cheers:

I bought a 14gal Blichmann this year  does it make my beer any better, probably not ... but its my money. Certainly easy to use and cleaning is nice with stainless. I paid the extra for wheels so its easy to move about and the ability to pressure the beer out is essential unless you are going to elevate it.

I don't harvest yeast for now as wyeast is $6 - $7 so why mess about, when I get back to Oz I will become a rancher again :(

Bit of a pain that the fittings are weldless but in turn its not that hard to pull it to bits and makes cleaning easy. I live in a nice cool part of the world for now, temperature control will be interesting when I get home.

Anyway the Blichmann is a nice piece of kit if you want to spend the money. Cooling is probably something to consider.
