Many (American) mead-makers (including Ken Schramm and Gotmead recpies) recommend Lalvin dried yeasts. Most of these are wine-making yeasts, so also useful for anyone looking to produce small quantities of wine at home.

However after not being able to find them at any Australian LHBS (or site sponsors) I contacted Lalvin. Unfortunately the end result is that only one Lalvin yeast strain (EC-1118) is available locally in 'home brew' quantities (packs less than 500g). In addition they no do not endorse any pack down of their product (which is why various LHBS used to sell them in small quantities, but no-longer can).

So here in Australia to get the various Lalvin yeasts recommended for mead or small scale-wine-making you'll need to order them from the USA (where they are all available in 5g packs - go figure) or buy them in 500g packs. Since 500g of dried yeast is more than most 'normal' home-brewers will use, I thought a 'bulk buy' might be useful.

Here is a list of the Lalvin dried yeast strains I've been looking at:

Lalvin ICV D47 Ctes-du-Rhne (Chardonnay, ros and mead)
Lalvin 71B-112 Narbonne (Residual sugar whites, nouveau & young red)
Lalvin RC212 Bourgovin (Pinot Noir)
Lalvin DV10 Epernay (Sparkling/Champagne)
Lalvin ICV K1 Marquee (All purpose/Montpellier - formerly K1V-1116)
Cost for bulk buy:
$7.50 /100g
$3.80 /50g

Lalvin EC-1118 Champagne (Sparkling/Stuck ferment)
Cost for bulk buy:
$5.10 /100g
$2.60 /50g
(This is the only Lalvin yeast readily available at LHBS in small packs, so please only add to an existing order, else buy it from your LHBS)

At that price I don't want to have to mess with other quantities, so 100g or 50g should be adequate for most people I hope. Yeast will be weighed on micro-scales and packed into small clear zip-lock bags. If you're not going to use the yeast in a hurry, I can vacuum-seal it, but please add $1 (per order) to cover the cost of the plastic-vacuum-bags.

Local pickup is available for anyone out this side of Melbourne. For others Express Post is best, which is $8.00 for 500g Satchel. Small amounts could also be sent via standard mail in a larger envelope for about $2.

Minimum total order is 500g of each yeast strain, so we need individual strain orders to be at least that amount. Total order for each yeast strain also need end up being a multiple of 500g.

Please add your name to the list below if you'd like to participate in the Bulk Buy, there is no time-deadline, but I'd like get it done as soon as possible, so as soon as there is sufficient interest I'll order the yeast(s) required.

More informaiton about the yeast strains can be found here:

I can also send the PDF's supplied by Lallemand Australia if requested.

If you're looking to make mead, I have a bulk (1kg) quantity of Yeast Nutrient and DAP which I could package and include with a yeast order.
(Bintani) Yeast Nutrient 100g : $3.00
DAP 100g : $1.00
No additional details on this stuff, just add it to your yeast order if you need some.

Is this a Melbourne only bulk buy? I can imagine you may not want to be bothered splitting things up and sending them around Oz....

I've got no problem posting them - in some ways it's easier. The supplier I spoke to was very confident that the yeast is fine out of the fridge for 2-3 days, so while express post is best even standard post may be sufficient.

Excellent idea, Wolfy. I've got some liquid yeast that I've used for one batch and waiting to get round to using again, but want to give the dry yeast a run as well. :)

thanks for organising this.

thanks for organising this.
We'll it's been up for a week now but the running totals are still short of the minimum order requirements.
Hopefully there will be a few more people interested - so I'll leave it for another week - but if we're still short then it won't be possible to continue.

Running total so far:

All up we have 1200g of yeast there. We may not have enough to order all of them, but maybe we could just pick a few of those yeasts and that way we might get to 500g orders of those. What do you think?

that's not a bad idea.
D47 seems popular for four out of six of us and I can up my quantity to 100g. The small retail packs of 5g yeast cost about the same as the 50g so happy to have a bit more. I am sure to use it more than twice...

The K1 is less popular so I can change to a bigger quantity of the 71B-112 (as it is also popular), although only if it would make a different style/flavour of mead to the D47. my experience is limited in this area, so...

As per the first post, I have only 1kg of Yeast Nutrient and DAP, so if the orders above are confirmed there is no more Nutrient available.
(Unless another full 1kg is ordered - which I doubt will happen)

I'll leave it for 2 weeks (the 3rd) before confirming details and contacting everyone who's expressed interest.
But here is how we stand right now:
D47: 550g
71B: 500g
212: 100g (don't think there will be interest)
DV10: 150g
KV1: 150g
1118: 250g
The last 3 are essentially high alcohol tolerance champagne type yeasts.
Since 1118 can be purchased from LHBS in 5g packs, my suggestion would be to look at getting either of the other two as part of the bulk buy.
Of course there would need to be agreement on which one (if any) and then interest for 500g.

Not too late, however we have to end with 500g orders of each yeast strain, I can be a somewhat flexible with some of what I'd like, which gives a little room, but it also depends on others, so we'll see what happens in a couple of days.
