Get a larger kettle if you can afford it from beerbelly it gives you room to move if you want to dao a larger batc every now and then

If you have a urn already they make a good HLT so use it for that. All the urns i have seen are direct contact with the element. This is not a big issue as i use an immersion element as well as a burner to get my boils going quicker.

while I think of it, 10 internets to anyone willing to post a piccy of their urn modified to be a kettle- I'm assuming most people replace the tap with a ball valve with a pickup tube?
I don't have a pic handy, but I haven't changed the tap on mine. I do however have a beerbelly hopscreen and pickup tube in it (the back of the tap already had a 1/2" BSP thread to attach to). I fit a length of 19mm PVC tubing over the tap to get wort out and into the cube.

Bribie do you use that for BIAB? How much was it? Got any more pics?
A tad over $300

So is the concealed element in the Crown somehow kept from touching wort, or is it below a kind of false bottom still in contact with the liquid?
If a false bottom, then fine for water, but not great for cleaning or possible build up of scorchable stuff I imagine.

I understand that the element is 'embedded' in the base much in the same way as an electric frying pan, Crown owners might be able to clarify. If the element burns out however I wonder if it could be replaced? I guess the Birko one could be replaced if necessary.

EDIT: The tap is quite robust as is, and has a 'click on' position so you don't need to keep your finger on the handle. And a short tube can be slipped on for transfer to cube.

The element in the Crown Urn is definately totally hidden.
We took stock of some last month & were so impressed with them, we just took delivery of a pallet load before Crown's 1st March price increase.

I'm seriously thinking of brewing with a couple myself as I'll be able to happily brew inside, whereas I can't/won't with gas.

Ross, remember to hold one for me :p
