Had the day off so I cooked my 1st partial BIAB today. Had a lot of fun and enjoyed the process. Milled some grain, mashed in a bag and brewed an Oktoberfest recipe I found on the net. Everything went to plan and I had a good day.

Then the wife came home and complained about the smell. I thought it smelt fine, but in order to stay in the good books, (happy wife, happy life) I need to look at other cooking options. Fortunately I have a large brick shed in the backyard in which I carry out my wood working hobby. My wife has stated she would prefer I use it for my brewing hobby as well and has agreed that I may have to purchase some equipment to enable this to occur.

So, what would you recommend as a decent burner to enable me to BIAB in my 21 litre pot ? I have electricity hooked up to the shed, but am happy to use LPG as well.

Thanks

Get a 4 ring burner or a rambo or a mongolian or an italian spiral.

Also get a 2400 immersion element (grimwood are good).

Electricity and gas for when you run out of gas or have a blackout.

Can't see what could possibly go wrong

option 1: get a new wife
option 2: cook something nice and smelly at the same time that she likes (e.g. curry)
option 3: use it as an excuse to buy some cool bling - personally I bought a 40L concealed element crown urn and it's fantasic. Probably safe from a fire point of view in a woodwork shed too.
option 4: give up home brewing...

She will never be happy no matter what you do and she needs something to complain about

If you have a spot of level or tiled or pebbled ground around the shed, brew there, in the shade of the shed. No hassles having the 'smells' collect in an enclosed area. I personally don't like the idea of brewing indoors at all. Also, no/low fire hazard brewing outside walls... depends.

I remember people getting rambo burners or equivalents from Rays outdoors or BCF pretty cheapish. Might be worth a go. Otherwise 3 ring burners are darn cheap.

I won't recommend a 4 ring burner. I have not seen anyone that uses a 4 ring burner and does not modify it or use a HP regulator to not have sooting issues on their kettle. Unnecessary work. (4 rings put out too much gas and don't suck in enough air easily to oxygenate the flame unless you get it just right).

I brew outside ... the only complaint I ever get from the wife is ... why do you keep changing your beer ??? make one .. get it right and life will be great ... I wish she would tell me to spend money on decent kit ... lucky for me a sly $100 goes away each fortnight !!! from now on its dedicated to the build !!! Not 100% behind sharing the wood working and brewing in the same building .... I think the wood work needs to go :)

option 4: stick her in the brick shed

Im building a boat in the back yard and have become friends with a lot of other builders one of which has a blog. His wife gets heaps of emails from blokes asking how they can grt their wife onside.

Her resonse........ get a new wife

Just get an urn. If the wife has allowed you to purchase new gear then just go that route. Easy.

Urn... $200+

Stainless steel 2200W element $50 - drill a hole, screw it up... 30L boils no problem! No burners, no gas, no fumes... the only downside is speed :(

Sure, a gas burner, or an electric element will boil your 21 litre pot - but don't tell your wife that. You "need" an urn. Might as well get a 40 litre one if you are spending the cash. Full size brews. :)

Seemax.... so add two !!! and use an immersion heater ... simple ...

I have a 40 l stock pot with a heating elm .... and it can kiss my *** .. lol ... just kidding... its awesome .. just not big enough ...

find some 50l kegs and a angle grinder and a heap of discs .. go to town and make your own .. its worth the effort just to be able to say you made it .. plus u know every dent in the bloody thing ... Mine seems to be never ending but ... really so far a 70l HLT, 100l mash tun and a 100l Keggle has cost me around $40 ... although I just spent $90 on a couple of 2200w heat elms from Ross .. thought about using Hot water elms ... cheap as off EBAY ... but power is sometimes an issue ... so the 2200w will surfice ... Excited ??? MUCH !!!

Pretty much.

Brew outside.
Make sure all the doors & windows are closed.
Get gas burner & get 2 gas bottles. Always keep one full. Perfect for when the bbq runs out midway through a bbq.

Even when you're going inside to get ****, she's gonna complain about the constant door noises.

Brew her a framboise or kriek, or name the occasional beer after her.

Moving my brewing outside was the best thing I ever did. Far more enjoyable than half-arse partial volume kitchen brewin, regardless of what the missus says.
