JIM Nabors, who starred in the massive 1960s television hit Gomer Pyle has died at the age of 87.
Nabors became well-known as the bumbling deputy sheriff on The Andy Griffith Show, before taking the character to his own hit show, which ran for five years, reports TMZ.
He also had a substantial film career, appearing in movies, including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas alongside Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton and Cannonball Run II, again opposite Burt Reynolds.
Nabors also was an accomplished singer, who recorded 28 albums and scored five US gold records and one platinum record.
Nabors was openly gay and a rumour circulated for years that he was secretly married to Rock Hudson, which was not true.
Nabors was married to his partner of 40 years, and the couple lived in Hawaii.
