I'd put money on it being the crush - I brew with Aussie, British & European malts with very little difference in efficiency. My average for a 5% brew is 85%.
We take a lot of care in our crushing... just running all malts on a single pass on 1 setting can give you very variable results. Grain freshness can have a bearing as well.

Dont forget different malts are different sizes, so if your gap isnt changing then your crush is.(not a huge ammount)
 
Do most of you guys run your grain through the mill once or twice? I myself only go once but might try twice if it can improve efficiency by 10%, I normally get an efficiency of 76%...

I think you've got a customer here then Ross...I was more than pleased with such an increase in efficiency. In fact I think I need to order some more :D
