I have just scored another chest freezer for serving my keg beer, the last one died after two and a bit years.
Now it was an oldie when I got it and have again replaced it with another secondhand oldie.
The "Fridge Or Freezer For Kegs And Fermentors?" thread had me thinking how long do we guys get out of a chesty converted to run as a fridge?

It is a bit of a hassle looking for and refitting a freezer but if I can get 3 years plus I am happy.

Mine was 12 months old before I started to use it as a kegerator. It been going well now for three years. The shed can get up to 50-60c in the summer but the old girl still hasn't missed a beat.

I only got mine 3 months ago brand new, but its still going strong!!

Only got mine about a month ago and have it running at about 2-4*C with the help of a tempmate. I can't see why it won't last as long as it normally would. I read in the other thread that condensation causing corrosion would be a problem, but I haven't heard this anywhere else. I'll reserve judgment until mine dies (mine was practically new when I bought it).

One thing I will point out - you'll find that a lot of guys here on AHB would have bought 5-10yr old freezers, and obviously how old they are will affect how long they will run for. Perhaps we should get people to state how old/what sort of condition (roughly) their freezers were when they bought them?

I'm guessing mine (a 220L Fisher&Paykel) was about 2-5 yrs old when I got it.

My first freezer (200L tuckerbox) went for about 18 months. It looked like it was older than me. It lost its gas.

My current chest freezer is a 300L Vulcan. Im guessing that over 30 years old. Its been going for 18 months.

Mine is about 20 years old built by my father in law.I only use it for fermenting and can get it to sit at a constant temp just using a timer.

Cheers Brad

Got mine secondhand late last year and it has been running pretty much since then through a fridgemate at around 2-4 degrees. It looks like she was about 4 or 5 years old when I got her, so hopefully she lasts :icon_cheers:

Got a 15-20 year old chesty that I have been running on a tempmate as a fermenting fridge.... It's been in that role for 5 years now. I'll cry when it packs it in :(

Yep mines a wood vaneered (ugly) model from the 70s or something 'vulcan' i think is the brand name... AT any rate, I've had it for over two years now and it's still going strong. I swear the tick when the compressor switches on/off is louder than it used to be - is this a sign that it's on its way out?:S

my first kegerator HERE was a hand-me-down from the oldies, almost 20 yrs old when i got it, it couldn't handle the pressure of being converted and promptly shat itself after 3 or 4 mths, i was a bit devoed..

the new freezer is over 12 mths and going like a zyrtec B)

(touch wood)

cheers

I guess the freezer is about 18 years old. My beer (keg) fridge was purchased mid '77, and has only had the door seal replaced.
They don't make em like the used to!

I believe mine was purchased around the same time i was born.... its been the family's freezer as long as i can remember..
It shit itself about 25years ago and the repairman put something in it and said it will still be running when the frame rusts away...
Well he was right... its stil cold as but there isn't much left of the chassis...
I had to put it up on concrete blocks and timber as most of the base rusted away years ago..

Sqyre... ;)

P.S. i'm 36... :icon_cheers:

I've got a 1970's GE chest freezer for a fermentation chamber. Been using it about 2 years only in the summer and it's still good. There's a bit of panel vibration, but even on hot days it only cycles on for a few mins every hour. Working fine. Masses of insulation compared to the new ones, but I guess new insulation tech is better.

Parent's purchased a Kelvinator 500L around early 70's and it's never missed a beat. Been running all that time. Things were made to last back then. Still got the fridge which is a General Electric that was purchased in 1970. I recently replaced it with a 2 year old Simpson so I can convert it to a Kegerator :) . 5 possibly 6 cornie capacity.

the kelvinator700L I got last year fom my missus' work when it closed down is at least 10yrs old and still going strong. They built whitegoods to last back then. you should easily get 10+ yeasrs out of any whitegoods. Esp a chest freezer as its not constantly running unlinke a fridge. Mine has been turned off for about a month now (just moved) and I opened it the other day and it was bloody cold inside. great things chest freezers.

Got a second hand chest freezer two years ago- looked oldish, from the early eighties most likely. Anyways it died recently, causing a dry spell of brewing (and forced reduction of beer intake) until I got a new ferment fridge (it's an upright fridge)

Also received my GE Tuckerbox for a wedding present 33 years ago. Changed the compressor a few months back. Never missed a beat.

Cheers, Hoges.
