If this has been discussed before and someone has a link, then please point me in the right direction.

A mate was asking if the cleaning fluids left much residue where I pour them in the garden. I have one section in the garden where people tend to relieve themselves, so I chuck it there (I don't try and grow anything there).

I generally use Sodium Percarbonate and starsan. How bad are these for the environment? Will I kill everything in my garden if I continue to pour them on? How bad are they for the waterways if they are poured down the drain? Is this even alowed?

They are both pretty eco friendly afaik, sod perc breaks down to sodium carbonate, water and oxygen. Not sure about the specs on phosphoric acid (its a food additive though), but I've generally seen starsan labeled as eco friendly.

From what I understand these products mainly work by changing the water to very high and very low ph respectively.

So probably the major problem you'd have is changing soil ph I guess?

I tip them down the drain personally. Don't make enough of a solution for it to be a waste to throw it out.

all my cleaning fluid and sanitiser just gets poured onto the garden under some hedges... haven't noticed any detrimental effects. Pretty sure it's all ok.

I was told by a specialist waste management guy "the answer to pollution is dilution". I use his theory and water every thing down. I dont put any on my garden. I do try and use the most Eco friendly products any way.

Tidal Pete hasn't been visiting you has he? Perc just turns into washing soda which should be fine diluted. Starsan is a great plant nutrient, phosphates - but probably add some lime to the soil now and again to stop it getting too acid. Grew a magnificent crop of Eggplant using spent grain and Starsan.

James Spencer of www.basicbrewingradio.com once interviewed the head guy at Five Star Chemicals the maker of StarSan. He indicated that Starsan which has lost it's effectiveness (gone cloudy, and/or Ph greater than 4) is actualy a good garden fertilizer (in moderation). He said that a customer had written in saying that used Starsan is wonderful for their roses.

I normally tip both my napisan solution and starsan solution down the drain into the septic system.

Sodium percarb is biodegradeable. I water my plants with it (veges, herbs) and they flourish. Starsan also is harmless. When I use bleach, I re-use the solution and rinse with a couple of litres of cold water that goes down the drain (not sure where else to put that). Any other rinse water goes on the garden.

I rarely use water other than brewing cleaning water on my veg/herb/hop garden. Has to be above 35 degrees three days in a row for me to start using extra water.

well
I know not to pour it on the grass anymore.

Outside the lounge on the brick paving where I want to keep the weeds and ants down ! ! !

Cheers all! I usualy chuck it down the drain or in the garden where nothing is growing (there was nothing there to start with). But might put some plants in there and see how they go!

well if everyone is urinating in that spot i would suggest a lemon tree ;)

I fill my laundry sink up and soak everything in that, seeing how it is stainless steel I figured it would be best to use. Then after a few days I just pull the plug. It all goes through a process plant before getting into our waterways, so I figure it's pretty safe. Might even help kill the nasties on the way. (doubt it)
