I am new to home brewing and just wondering if anyone can recommend a good allround home brew / beer book... Basically after one that covers the basics of all types of home brewing and the various attriubtes of beer and its ingrediants.

"How to brew" by John.J. Palmer is regarded as the bible by most people,it covers everything you need to know.
"Brewing classic styles" by Jamil Zainasheff and Palmer is a great companion book.Covers alot of recipes and gives simple instruction on how to make them.

Just did a quick search for threads with Brew* +Book in the title: -

Including yours, there are 22 threads with your question in the title, probably hundreds with the question mentioned in discussion. The search function is very handy and it would be a good idea to familiarise yourself with it.
And yes Palmer isnt a bad starting point.

Yes, the search function is handy and so is "Google", but this is a forum & we're here to advise, so congratulations on starting a new thread!

Your local brew shop will help you out with their latest best seller, but I found Charlie Papazian's "Complete Joy Of Homebrewing" a lot of fun.

Good luck exploring the joys ahead... and this forum has taught me more than a book ever has!

I found John Palmer's book a bit heavy going to start off. Quite technical and as such a good reference book once you have mastered the basics. Found "The Complete Guide to Home Brewing in Australia" by Laurie Strachan in the local library which was easy to read and get you going pretty quick.

the new book yeast by chris white and jz is pretty good but more on the fermentation side. the complete joy of home brewing and the companion by charlie p are both good entry level books.

Mate I've got the How to Brew John Palmer book and I also have Brewing Crafts by Mike Rodgers Wilson. Palmer's book is a bit heavy. Brewing Crafts maybe an easier read when starting.

That said, I'd have to agree the Charlie P book Complete Joy of Home Brewing was a very good introductory book. The beginner section is a bit outdated with older styles - the fermenter and syphoning is much simpler now I think. Only been brewing myself for a year.

I recommend you give Brewing Crafts a quick read to get a more modern view to home brewing and then sink into Charlie P's book which is just plain fun!

Happy reading... and brewing!!!

How to Brew by Palmer and also Yeast by White arrived in my PO box yesty. Just starting to read them. After reading bits n pieces off the How To Brew online version I can't recommend the 3rd edition book enough. Really A LOT of great info for the brewer, new or experienced.

I'd recommend the Laurie Strachan book if you can get it, he writes in a very approachable style and obviously isn't into USA specific stuff like pounds and ounces and big glass carboys :)
