Been reading over this thread: http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/Tigh...late-t5191.html

Decided I'm going to build me one.

Basically I have looked at all of the constructions listed here: http://brewiki.org/StirPlate#checkerplate and I'm not sure what magnets or stir bar to get. I have everything esle all sorted, just not sure on the magnets.

I have found this link here: http://www.ssapl.com.au/ which has heaps of different bars and I'm at a loss into what to get.

So anyone out there with one of these could you please post me a pick and or point me in the right direction?

Cheers,
Jarrad

Jazzafish, I found the oblique spheroid hematite magnets from jaycar pretty good - a few in the TAS thread, including myself, used them. As a pair, they work as both the magnet on the fan and the stirbar, they are cheap, durable and easy to clean. On the downside, they are probably a little heavy and I cracked a flask by being careless with it. The keyword is careless so I'll be making my 2nd stirplate using the same magnets.

I also used this polycarbonate case to house it - neat and cheap.

Have fun making the stirplate - I found it a great little project which pays for itself every time I make a brew.

I got my magnets from Jaycar. There's a few options, either get a couple of the larger ones or a few more of the smaller.

As for stir bars, I got mine from Livingstone at Stir Bars

The size I guess depends on the size of youre flask.

As an aside however, ithe Stir Plate is a great toy, and I'm glad I've got it but the same thing can be really easily accomplished by having your starter in a PET bottle and shaking the heck out of it regularly.

Mind you, you can boil your stater in the Borosilicate Flask, drop it in the fridge and then put it on the stir plate :D Can't do that with a PET bottle :p
