Hi Guys I'm about to buy a grain mill, what is the best and most efficient way of purchasing and storing Grain?
What do most brewers use as a good all-round base malt for Ales and IPAs?

Thanks for your advice

For storing my grain I use wheelie bins. I have been doing this for many years now and have never had any problems with rodents or bugs.

They don't take up much space and you can store lite stuff like empty cubes on top of them.

I keep the grain inside the original sack tied up with an old sock.

As for base malts I love Maris otter.

I think alot of people use these. If I eventually get into AG that is probably what I will go with, AFAIK you can store half a sack in each one.

Get into the bulk buys and get some form of lockable container. One happening at the moment up your way I believe.

I use a smaller version of one of >THESE< which fit a full sack perfectly.

Agree with Yob. I've got a few 250L food grade storage drums that were used for transporting pickles etc. from europe. Washed them out with soap and then a dash of hot water with sodium percarb. Cleaned up well and nothing can get inside. I find each drum can store 3 sacks of grain with plenty of room for shifting them around.

I've been looking for the 40/60L (?) size of those for a little while with no luck.

Would like something that will fit the whole sack. I seem to go through the stuff a bit quicker these days. 17 odd kg last weekend...

As long as its vermin and moisture proof, pretty much anything

Un-cracked grain will last a long time if kept away from light and moisture

Thanks Guys

I've just purchased a mill, and put my name down on the Hoppy Days bulk buy for a couple of sacks, next stop storage containers.

I use a couple of 60l metal rubbish bins from Bunnings, with some foam strip around the outside edge of the lid to provide a good seal. Nothing getting to my grain. Each bin holds a full sack and sundry bags of spec grains
