Afternoon guys,

I'm walking a mate through his first AG brew on the weekend, but he wants to do a light/mid beer, and for simplicity and to keep costs down I'd like to limit it to one hop variety if possible. Anyone have a good recipe we could follow? Or have a suggetion of how we could adapt the DrSmurto's Golden Ale to a light variant?

Cheers,

Stew

It'll depend on what your mate likes.

I've got a recipe here, which is a SMaSH ale, that's very simple and very nice.

If he likes hoppy American style Pale Ales, it'll suit his tastes.

Alternatively, I've also done the above with Perle Malt (4kg at $3.50 per kg from CB) and Citra. Cheap recipe and you end up with leftover hops as well. Mash at 68 degrees for a good balanced beer.

Otherwise, maybe give a few more parameters and I'm sure the good forum will help you out.

I bottled my first attempt at using oats a couple of weeks ago, sampling the first bottle last weekend it will be nice.

1 kg of light Munich (for malty flavour and a touch more colour)
0.5 kg of Carapils/dextrine malt (for foam, body in such a low OG beer)
0.3 kg of Uncle Toby's Quick Oats directly in the mash (for more body and mouthfeel in such a low OG beer)
X kg of Pilsner or Pale malt depending on efficiency to hit OG of 1.034

Mash high, 69 for an hour.

So I had OG of 1.034 and believe I ended with 1.010.
(don't have beersmith here but believed I ended with 3.1% alc)

I used Magnum bittering hops at 30 min as only hop addition to about 29 IBUs.

This ended up being a nice, easy-drinking mid-strength pale ale.
Clearly a bit of bittering in there but not over the top, some hop flavour from adding only hops at 30 mins but no late hopping at all.

Nice and quick brew.

The Magnum can be replaced with whatever hop you have really, and the boil time stretched to 60 min.
I just went with something I had in the freezer..

I'm calling it my Uncle Toby's Light Ale :D

thanks

If your going to single hop, use galaxy. Even had stone and wood draught ale? Thats the hop in there.

Here is one I did recently using Nelson Sauvin. The boys enjoyed it at a recent gathering, and couldn't tell it was a 3.3%.

Recipe: Slider
Brewer: Ken
Style: American Pale Ale
TYPE: All Grain
Taste: (35.0)

Recipe Specifications
--------------------------
Batch Size: 20.00 L
Boil Size: 26.63 L
Estimated OG: 1.037 SG
Estimated Color: 5.3 SRM
Estimated IBU: 28.6 IBU
Brewhouse Efficiency: 55.00 %
Boil Time: 90 Minutes

Ingredients:
------------
Amount Item Type % or IBU
2.20 kg Pilsner Malt (1.5 SRM) Grain 50.00 %
1.00 kg Ale Malt (2.3 SRM) Grain 22.73 %
0.40 kg Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain 9.09 %
0.40 kg Vienna Malt (4.1 SRM) Grain 9.09 %
0.20 kg Caramalt (15.2 SRM) Grain 4.55 %
0.20 kg Carared (20.0 SRM) Grain 4.55 %
9.00 gm Nelson Sauvin [11.50 %] (80 min) Hops 15.1 IBU
10.00 gm Nelson Sauvin [11.50 %] (20 min) Hops 9.7 IBU
12.00 gm Nelson Sauvin [11.50 %] (5 min) Hops 3.8 IBU
30.00 gm Nelson Sauvin [11.50 %] (dry hop at 3 days left in ferment) Hops
1.06 items Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 15.0 min) Misc
3.00 gm Calcium Chloride (Mash 60.0 min) Misc
6.00 gm Gypsum (Calcium Sulfate) (Mash 60.0 min) Misc
19.99 L Mordialloc Water
1 Pkgs California Lager (Wyeast Labs #2112) [CultYeast-Lager

Mash Schedule: Double Infusion, Medium Body
Total Grain Weight: 4.40 kg
----------------------------
Double Infusion, Medium Body
Step Time Name Description Step Temp
30 min Protein Rest Add 6.60 L of water at 40.7 C 37.0 C
30 min Saccrification Add 11.00 L of water at 98.3 C 72.0 C
10 min Mash Out Add 6.43 L of water at 86.2 C 75.6 C

Adjust hopping to suit if no chilling. The idea with mashing 37 to 72 was to increase body with increasing abv. You could do this with Dr Smurto's Golden Ale.

I plan to use the same grain and mashing schedule, and use a different hop when I next do a light/mid.

I love nelson sauvin. Both NS and Citra are good hops for a single hop brew - they are just so flexible and flavoursome.

If you want to turn Dr Smurto's GA into a light, up the caramalt % and vienna %, drop back the pils and mash high - around 69C. Scale back the IBU's to about 20-25 IBU's.

I haven't done it but that should up the body and give you something pretty nice for a light beer

Since i have beersmith open try something like this basically:

Thanks for all the advice and replies guys! I think I'll give the scaled back Golden Ale a try. Will let you know how it goes!

for a nice light single hop.. try this one. Nelson Sauvin Summer Ale

Excellent light coloured ale... do it as a mid. Just scale it down to about a 1042OG

I did an awesome NS SMaSH with:

100% Weyer Pils (1.045)
NS (approx 30ibu @ 30, 15 and cube)
Nottingham

nice quaffer!

yeah that is a good one. That's exactly how i do my house beer, but i have been using US05 instead. Still comes up great!

NS supplies getting low in my freezer now. Need to source some more.....

nice quaffer!

This is mine.

It disappeared very quickly, and is cheap as chips.

Citra and NS are my two fave hops, and can be used interchangeably. I mean that in the sense that if you get a grasp on how to use one, you can use the other - same methodology.

The only addition i could give to DJRs very helpful comments/recipe would be to switch the pilsner and munich.

I brew a light amber ale of sorts and have found over several variants that munich as the base malt gives it more body and malt flavour - Link

EDIT - fixed link
