+1 for Gladwrap method, and +1 for using the fermenter lid O ring, perfect size, and generally 'rolls' onto the Gladwrap giving a nice flat top.
Find it is great to peer through at various stages of the fermentation. I normally throw my sanitised hydrometer in, I never have to open and taps/lids to take measurements, I just look through the Gladwrap. It is like a beautiful Beer Window.
If I do open it up, I always replace with a new piece.
One to watch out for though, is that sometimes when you are not careful (*ahem* past experience) it can be quite easy for the removed Gladwrap and/or O Ring to accidentally fall in through the wide fermenter opening when removing.
