Hello all,
I have just finished getting my Grainfather and Matho's controller sorted out and I am ready to do my first ever AG. Looking for suggestions/ideas on what to make using the ingredients (minus the grain bill) that I already have in my brew fridge. I have been really loving golden ales lately and of course don't mid pale ales, but have gone a little off them of late.This is what I have at my disposal;

my selections are;

Yeast- Safale s-04, Safbrew T-58, Safale s-33 and a Lallemand Abbaye

Hops- 120gms Nelson Sauvin, 80gms Mocaic, 25gms Northern brewer, 60gms Falconer's flight, 50gms Galaxy, and 80gms Hersbrucker

I'm looking at around 5% ABV., I have no idea of my efficiency yet.

I'll keep an update of the selected brew on this thread. (and share a few with the chosen brews "chef")
TIA

Make a simple ale first

Keep it simple so it ends up with nice clean flavours

3x3x3 is good

3 Grains
3 Hops
3 Hop additions

My first All Grain is going to be a Dr Smurtos Golden Ale, following the recipe from here (AHB) got all the ingredients yesty, brewing set to take place next weekend.

...sorry for the hijack but DSGA seems to be unanimous as a good first AG brew.

English Bitter

Ale malt, touch of medium crystal & wheat

Three English hops or one 3 times @ 60 min 30 min & 5 min or flameout

An English yeast fermented @ 18c for two weeks

4.2% around 30 IBUs :icon_drool2:

I like to drink beer....Hahaha, Drinking an English bitter now (extract) not bad, but a has a "golden syrup" after taste. Not sure why, I have made this before and it was excellent.

I did see that recipe and it looks good. Leaning towards it at this stage

Here are the top 15 reasons that new AG brewers get wrong with their first beer

1. They complicate the recipe instead of keeping it simple
2 They complicate the recipe instead of keeping it simple
3 They complicate the recipe instead of keeping it simple

15 They complicate the recipe instead of keeping it simple

5-10% Med Xtal
10% Wheat
Ale malt like Joe White, BB, Marris, even Pilsner malt, wont matter

Bittter it to about 30 Ibu
25-30 IIBUs at 60min
Split the last 7-10 IBU between Flav & Aroma additions

Northern Brewer to bitter with Galaxy late ( I like POR & SAAZ or EKG & Fuggles for something English )

Will give you a good base to work off while you are getting familiar with your new gear. Its a good recipe to learn how different ingredients work in beer, You can easily judge how changing something changes the beer
