I have been brewing a cider for a week now and over the past couple of days I have had SG reading of around 1.018. I put in about 250-300 gms of lactose to sweeten it up. I am not sure wether it has finished fermenting or not as this SG seems quite high. I also used around 6 litres of juice and 2 kgs of sugar for a 25L brew. the yeast came with the can (black rock).
Is this final sg normal with lactose as I have never used it before?

I to have been brewing an apple cider for about a week, with the same SG at the moment of 1.020 after using 200 grams of Lactose. The only difference is my brew came from a kit and only had airlock activity for about 2-3 days and then nada. I am going to leave it for another week checking the SG each dau and see if it slowly drops. Bit worried about the qiuck primary fermentation and then nothing though. An experienced brewer told me that you will expect to end up with a higher than normal SG becaus eof the Lactose.

Cheers Ps my first post...

what temp has it been fermenting ? try swirling the fermentor to stir up the yeast.

Mine has been stable at 24 degrees C, I will try swirling and see if it makes a difference. would adding more yeast and nutrient make a difference or is that verboten.

Thanks

I kegged mine at 1.018 and it was great. I took SG reading over a 4 day period and got the same result so I kegged it. It was a very nice brew and got me and my mates nicely drunk. I put the higher SG reading down to the lactose. Got another brew going as we speak along with a very nice porter.
I love brewing!!!

Last night just before bed, I gave the kit a vigorous swirl/shake and this morning the kit is bubbling away nicely. I suppose the yeasties just needed reminding what their being employed for...making alcohol..

Cheers
