The hole can be used to install a tap via a length of tubing. There is a clearance between bottom of basket and base of carboy.

The hole would be for those who purchased the demijohn with tap. Probably came standard like that to be universal.

What are the dimensions of the basket? I'm wanting to know if it will fit in my ferm fridge. Cheers.

The diameter of the basket is 530mm, overall height is 830.

Is the hole threaded? Can it be tapped without having to manouver it like your making a ship in a bottle? I've heard this can be an issue with some of these h34r:
