I've made a bucket of death using a stainless pot and jug element. I notice that earth connects to the outside of the element, but do I need to also earth the pot itself? I will be running this through a safety switch, so need to make sure that will trigger if anything goes awry.

Also to prevent you from looking exactly like your avatar :p

Sorry mate, no electrician but I couldn't resist B)

Yes the pot itself should also be earthed.

...use advice at own risk.

Oi that was my HE you set up that way!!! FFS your tryin' to kill Olde Chap Chap!!! What did I do to you???

Seriously it's all good I only ever get a slight boot now and then... ;)

I would be fixing it to the Pot itself for sure as per other comments above.

Also not an electrician.

:icon_offtopic: Not really a 'bucket of death' though as its metal, and not HDPE/Plastic.

Earth it or else...

No flaming, though I did have difficulty working out what was going on. My idea of a bucket o' death is just that - a bucket, or fermenter. You'd have a hard time earthing a plastic vessel :)

Yes, the pot needs to be earthed. However, if the element is screwed to the pot so that there's a solid electrical connection between the two, and the element thread/socket/surround is well earthed, you don't need to add a separate earth to the pot.

EDIT: some photos would help us point you in the right direction

It's just a stainless stock pot with a 2400w coil type electric jug element fitted. There is continuity between the earth pin and the element, but not the earth pin and pot itself. I guess since the original jug was plastic there was no need for it to be made that way. So if I can somehow earth the pot, should I still be earthing the element as well?
