Ive been given a 60L drum that I was planning to use as a fermenter for double batches. It is a blue drum that uses a clamp ring to hold down the lid.

Problem is, it previously contained liquid soap and smells of the perfume.

Can someone offer a sugestion how the smell can be removed and if it will still be OK to use as a fermenter?

At least it should be clean! :p

Maybe try some PSR (Pink Stain) or Caustic Soda?

I know freebies are good, but honestly I'd be using it as a rain water catcher in the garden. Maybe give it a go with napisan and hot water and then rinsed really well with boiling water? After that put some water in and leave it for a week or two, then taste the water to see if its affected the taste of the water?
Cheers
Steve

Rinse thourougly with luke warm water a few times then use a good sanitizer. leave lid open to dry and check next day if it still smells.
Try the same again ... If still smell like soap... good luck
It may have set into plastic.

DO CHECK FOR MINOR SCRATCHES INSIDE.

We have these at work for flavours and food ingredients.
The guys use scoops to obtain what's inside and damage them
