Do you boil wort with

1) lid on

2) lid off

3) lid slightly off

On you get a good boil and save power

Off lets the toxins out

Slightly off the best of both worlds

What do you do ???

Pumpy :)

Lid off the whole time.

When I had a crappy burner I used to keep the lid on until it got going but now with the nasa I don't have to worry about it.

Being an extract brewer at the moment, and being forced to use the electric stove top, I get the boil going with the lid on and then go for the slightly off option. If I remove the lid entirely, boil dies down.

Money permitting will get nasa burner. The joys of being a poor student.

Sloth.

Lid off all the way, how else will your get your gravity up if the steam is condensing and dripping back into the kettle.

viva la lid off

Browndog

I am a 'lid on' to get to the boil .

Lid slightly of for the first half hour

Lid off from first hop addittions as I have a 'Hop sock'( the way too go ) and cant put the lid back on .

Lid off from start to finish and full flame , gives me 6lt/hr boil off consistently.

Cheers
Andrew

Lid on until boil starts then lid of until the end when I put the lid back on for part of the whirpooling.

I only have a three ring burner with a standard reg.

Steve

Lid on till boil then lid off.

I boil with the lid off, though since I have no chiller, I sit a lid on at flameout, to keep out all the nasties, until the next morning when it has cooled down enough for me to siphon it into the fermentor.

Cheers :)

Lid off.

Where's the poll, Pumpy?

Yeah , Sorry Stuster ,

I left the computer and the missus was so sick of me on the computer she put the AHB site on 'Parental Control '

It took me all afternoon to work out how to disable it !!! :(

Lid slightly off. I use a 2400W element and with the lid off it's a bit weak (in winter), slightly off it's quite vigorous and evaporation rate is the same at 3lt/hr. In summer it's strong enough with the lid off (less heat loss).

Cheers, Andrew.

That's a classic. Unfortunately, I was just laughing so hard I had to tell my wife this story.

Toxins, eh pumpy? I wonder if that's like the botulism you get from the no-chiller method.

I leave the lid partially off the whole time. I get a good evaporation rate and a vigorous boil.

I will leave the lid off if my preboil gravity is a little low.

Ooooohhh Kai,

Yeah, I had in the back of my mind something Palmer said in his book .

When I looked it up he said words to the effect ,

'There are Sulphur compounds which evolve and boil off If they are not removed during the boil they can frm Dimethyl sulphide which gives the beer a cooked cabbage flavor .

Not quite toxins

Pumpy.

For me the boil is like good sex.
Reaching the boil ='Socks off '
Full boil = 'Lid off '

:p

Homebreworld I never heard an Analogy like that one
