Hi All,

I've now had two plastic 20L jerry cans fail on me whilst no-chilling, both were food grade designed for water carrying. The first wouldn't seal once the hot wort was placed in it (it was lots of fun transferring 20L of near boiling wort to another jerry can  ), the second sealed initially but lost the seal overnight (fingers crossed on infection).

Any suggestions where I can get good quality cubes that are tried and tested and will survive the process?

Cheers

I got my cube from Aussie Disposals on Elizabeth Street. $10 for a 20L cube. Done 3 brews in it thus far.

Does it hold the pressure ok? (i.e. once you squeeze the air out does it stay out?)

Try using thread tape, it helps get a tight seal and helps prevent over tightening.

If you need a new cube; Crown Concepts in Cheltenham have cheap as cubes/fermenters.

20 litre cube: $5.90
25 litre cube: $6.20
15 litre round: $8.50
30 litre round drum: $10.50
60 litre round drum: $30
22 litre army style jerry: $10.50
25 litre blue jerry: $8.50
Taps: $1.00
(all prices listed are exc. GST)

Edit: The prices may have changed, but cheap is cheap.

Yeah mate, had no problems with that. I stick it against a wall and press in with my knee. I always get a nice satisfying expansion when I open it up again, so the seal is holding well.

I'm a bit of a novice, so probably better to wait til someone who has used their cube more than 3 times responds! I'd recommend the cube I got from there though :)

There a million places. Blue willow onws from bunnings work well. $20
Crown concepts or other plastic wholesalera also do the job.

Id rather pay a bit more and get quality than loose a while batch from splitting.

Just because it costs more, doesn't mean it's better quality.

They're all pretty dodgy really.

based on what? Ur extensive experience? Ive got a cube that cost $20 and its now 6yrs old.

Bunning dont do the willow cubes anymore, at least not the three round me ive done the rounds. Big W still have them, kmart close to coburg had cubes but not the 20L jerrys.

Only had trouble sealing cubes when i tried to tighten them too much.

Because they all go through the same moulding process, and they're all made of the same material.

Some are made a little better than others, but that has little to do with who manufactured it or how much you paid.

Thanks for all the replies.

Are people using cubes or jerry cans? (The clue maybe in the phrase "cubed wort" but I'd better check :) )

Cubes. Strong, thick plastic and seal well. Got them for $16 from a camping store. Currently have 4 in rotation. Seem to do the job well.

I've currently got 16 from Crown, I've thrown away about 3 but that was a result of infection, I've got 1 blue willow, the only issue I've had with sealing was I lost the rubber seal in the lid and didn't notice till I had it filled (was easy, just used another lid from my spare pile.

I get mine from the local camping store for under $20 each. Some are 5 years old. They look the same as Craftbrewers cubes they use for the wort kits (except the ones I get are 25L versions). They don't have any specific markings on them. On the bottom the recycle 2, and a "5 class plastics" (a quick google class plastics looks like a company in Vic). I've never had one split or leak.

Those ones from crown concepts are as good as any I've seen at less than half the price to buy anywhere else.

Can anyone comment on the People in Plastic cubes (20L & 25L) quality?

I have a stainless steel this going very well and even for cleaning.
The one I have is 30 liters.

And how do you squeeze the air out of those? I imagine they don't retain their shape to well??

Anyone got info on the people in plastic ones in melb? They're $7ea or less!!

I've got info from People in Plastic that they are definitely HDPE (although the sales lady recommends not using above 80C... weird?), so being HDPE they are good for continuous usage at 110C+ (so fine for brewing/no chilling purposes)?

Has anyone used the 25L ones and can comment on their actual volume? I'm keen for some 20L ones on the basis most say they can squeeze up to 23L into them, but I have a keggle which I will try to up my batch size slightly to 25L cube size, so be good to know the actual volume rather than trialling and having to manage any excess hot wort on brew day!

Cube bulk buy? lol
