I am starting a new topic for this thread to give everyone a reminder
Here are the full details for the Cheap hop bulk buy. You only have until this weekend to place your orders so don't miss out. Conact your nearest pick up point to order.

Below are the full details for ordering the 2006 hop harvest. Please keep a
copy of this e-mail, and pass it on to other digests/forums you are part of,
other brewers, club members, brew shops or micro-brewies that may be
interested.

These hops are are grown in Tasmania, and are packaged and sent straight
from the farm. They are this years crop, and packed as a 1 kg compressed
plug (15 cm in diameter, 10 cm high). The varieties and alpha ratings from
last year (as they haven't been harvested yet so cant give this years) are

Hallertau - 4.9
Tettnang - 4.2
Cluster - 5.2
Nugget - 10
Pride of Ringwood - 9
Pride Plus - 13

(a description of the hops is at the end of this e-mail).

PRICE - $13.00 a kilo. While the minimum order is 250 grams, I would prefer
the minimum order to be 500grams as it is easier for the person giving you
the hop to split and work out orders. (Individual Hop Collection Stations
may vary minimum order size.) As you can see, at this cheap price,
you can afford to bitter with the low Alpha hops for better flavours, and
you do capture easily that ellusive hop aroma and flavours. You only need to
order for a year, as this offer will be on again the same time next year.

DELIVERY - Delivery will be arround 1 May 2006. The hops will be sent
straight from the hop farm after they are dried and packed. You will not get
hops any fresher. In working out your orders, you should factor in the
delivery date, and that no other orders will be taken til next year (in
other words work out what you need for the year).

PICKUP - You will have to go to the Hop Collection Station to get your hops.
The address will be supplied once you place an order. If that is too far
away, you should make arrangements for the hops to be mailed/freighted to
you. You will be advised via the digest, and e-mail when the hops arrive.

PAYMENT - You do not need to pay for the order now. But the order MUST be
paid for before the hops are sent. Earlier the better for everyones sanity.
We will firstly confirm the order is "locked in" with the hop distributor
and farmer, and only then, you will be e-mailed to pay for your order. You
should then arrange payment with your local Hop Collection Station.

ORDERING - Orders are by e-mail only. You must supply full details,
including name, address and phone number incase we need to contact you to
confirm details. You must place your orders from
MONDAY, 13 FEBRUARY 2006 to MONDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2006.
No other orders will be taken after this period.
You have to place your order with the nearest Hop
Collection Station in your area. All initial questions should go to them.

HOP VARIETES
A brief summary for those who may not know their hops.

Hallertau - Classic german flavour hop found in most lagers, and wheat beers
you taste arround the world. Universally accepted as the best all round hop
to use.

Tettnang - suttle flavours especially suited to lighter styles. Excellent
substitute for Saaz in a Pilsners, but great in lagers, wits, weizens, and
Belgian ales. Fantastic for that wow factor.

Nugget - strong floral/fruity flavour more like an English hop. Quite
unique. Goes great in English styles, but also not bad in APA's as well. Any
beer where that more agressive flavour is desired.

Pride of Ringwood - Australian bittering hop, giving Aussie beers that
unique taste, but not a bad flavour hop as well if kept below 25 IBU.

Cluster - XXXX flavour hop. Yep, taste a XXXX and you have it (POR for
bitterness, cluster for flavour). I like the flavour, and have started using
it in triples, belgian strong ales and wits with great effect. Has that
spicy edge that goes well in these beers. A real surprise for me.

Pride Plus - its very similar to POR,
maybe a little more floral, and handles 30IBU with out the same off flavors
as POR, but all round a good Sub for POR

I am the Melbourne Hop Station for this and already have a few orders from forum members.

>>>>> $13.00 per kg straight from the farm <<<<

Do we have any other Melbourne Hop heads lurking?
You only have until this weekend to place your orders so don't miss out !!!!

Since I asked in chat about Nugget and only got smart arsed answers, I will ask out here as well.

For anyone that has used them. What are they like? Flavour, aroma etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

WellJohnno,
Guilty as charged, sorry <_< . Here is my take on them.
All descriptors of this hop have said "quite heavy and herbal" but they are considered a great bittering hop. I haven't tried them but will be getting a kilo as this is a good opportunity to try something that is not easy to get. With careful use they might be good in english ales or perhaps belgians? Sorry I can't give any first hand info Johnno but maybe later.

Edit; Subs: Galena, chinook, Cluster
Cheers

I am going to plant some Nugget rhizomes this year, so I have looking into them a bit, but never tried them in a brew. The impression I get is that they are a good subsitute for Chinook or Columbus. It surprises me a bit to hear that they are recommended for English pale ales - from what I have read they are very much an "American" hop. That said, the ones grown in Australia may have less of that American flavour/aroma.

I'm planning on grabbing some from this deal anyway and giving them a try. Can't go too far wrong for $13/kg! I might also grab some tettnang and maybe Hallertau...

G'day johnno,

I have used nugget a number of times and I like it!
It may not be as stunning as some other hops, but its earthy, slightly floral tones make for a broad range of styles. Palmer for eg uses it as a bittering hop for his American Brown and Porter recipes.

I have found in my limited experience its not a bad hop to use alonside POR because you can aim for higher IBU's without that certain taste POR has and it has a slight but much better aroma.

Try it in an Aussie style pale ,CPA clone or similar, I'd also like to give it a go in an APA as a bittering hop.

I've put my request in for 500g of Nugget and 500g of Pride Plus, but I'm not sure if anyone else in SA has an interest in these same hops so the pack can be split up.
I dont really want a kilo of each of those, however at this price I might just get them any way.

As for Pride Plus I have never even heard of it, but again the opportunity of $6.50 for 500g there's not alot to lose!

Cheers
BB

BoilerBoy,

What did you think of Nugget as an aroma hop? I have heard it is along the lines of Chinook - would that be a fair assessment (in terms of its aroma qualities)?

I'm not sure if I'll need 500g if all it is good for is bittering - but of course, as you say, for $13/kg its pretty hard to go wrong!

Thanks for the info BoilerBoy.

I too think a kilo may be a bit too much.

Back to deciding which I shall get.

T.D,

Never used chinook as yet, as the reports of others seem to suggest "caution" when using that particular hop. so I cant really compare the two objectively.

Nugget doesn't seem have an over powering aroma, however, because of the high AA% I would say most brewers would be using it solely as a bittereing hop and probably not as a late addition so its aroma would be mostly hidden.

I have used it in an Aussie Pale, Dave at Goliath suggested it as an experiment at the time for no other reason than"why not"

As I said in previous post it seems to work well with POR, gives a dynamic that POR just doesn't have - particularely as a late addition hop.

Feeling out of my depth here as my brewing experience would be akin to that of "space travel" so others would most likely have a better insight!

Bump.

Just a reminder to get orders in by Monday. I'm up to 60kgs already for Sydney / 'Gong. If you are outside any of the collection areas I'm willing to put some in a postbag if you want it - a 3kg post bag is $8.40.

hmmm how to explain to SWMBO the arrival to 60+kgs of hops. "It's not all for me.... honest!"

Mycle.

Mycle, you won't get 3 kilo of these hops in a bag, the Plugs are quite large.

Cheers

You might get 2 but I wouldn't hold your breath. Don't know the dimmensions.

I thought he meant dimmensions of the bag Duff.

Just a quick one guys as an option for the coordinators.

I'm happy to repackage these plugs into either 100gm or 250gm oxygen purged flat foils for $10 a kilo for anyone interested. Preserving a 10cm x 15cm plug can be a bit of a pain. Any hops for repackaging could be sent straight to me, to cut down on freight.

Anyway, just an offer/option for anyone interested....

cheers Ross
