Anyone know where I can buy sparkling wine bottles in Perth ?

I'd like to bottle some upcoming batches. Most HB stores sell the tirage bell and caps, but not the bloody bottles! I've phoned around a few glass suppliers, and the smallest amount I could buy a pallet (just under 900 bottles).

kook,
i found the easiest way was to swallow my pride and head to the recycling bins of the nearest RSL etc...

i now have over 12 crates of champers bottles (after just giving away 4 or 5 crates too). I'd happily give you some if you were in Sydney.

only person i've spoken to who uses champagne bottles has an arrangement with a function centre near to his house.

mother's day, melbourne cup day and Xmas are champers bottle goldmines.

also, function centres that do weddings. After a wedding you should clean up!!!!!

if you live near any vineyard areas, or can get there (e.g. margret river etc).... go to one of the local producers that makes a bubbles and ask them if they can keep their empties... it costs them $$ to have them recycled so they will be more than willing to hand them over.

If you lived near the Barossa I could probably throw you a few dozen new ones.. Little consalation I suppose.

My wife only drinks champagne (no beer), and I save as many as I need for the big beers for bottle aging.
If you were close ..........

Any of the Uni bars will probably be over-run with empty bottles of passion pop. :D

Funny you should mention that. Several years ago I went to a certain university campus to offload them of a canner and a 600 kilo malt mixer they no longer used. Said campus specialised in teaching food science, in particular viticulture and oenology. Littered through the bins there I saw dozens of empty bottles of both Passion Pop and Miranda Spumante. If this is what Australia's future oenologists are consuming, then I fear for the continued high-grade production of Australian wines

try your local reception centres , i managed to gather several dozen champers bottles after approaching one near my place and going there on a weekly basis to pick up whatever they had saved over the week for me ... after all theyre only tossing them out

Sorry off topic slightly,

but how do you "cap" a wine, champaign bottle?

The problem with Tirage bottles is their popularity and cost v's that of the more common 650mL bottles found in most HBS's - the old supply and demand concept. The 650mL bottles can be purchased from many glass suppliers in dozen lots due to the fact that they are so popular. I have not seen any glass suppliers in Sydney who will sell Tirage bottles to anyone (retailer, wholesaler or even private buyer) in anything less than a pallet load due to the fact that they generally have to order them in specially for the customer as they are nowhere near as popular. I know of a HBS that did order in a pallet after much pestering by several customers, but due to the difference in price per bottle, they sat there for well over twelve months before they all sold - thats twelve months of floor space for roughly 900 bottles when they were selling well over 1000 650mL bottles per month! Needless to say that is the last time they will ever get tirage bottles in...

Hey i'll gladly wave the flag the champers bottles are tops for big beers and long term storage.

As said before, reception centres are (were mine) best place to score clean bottles.

Due to my ^&%^ job  and lovely second son :D I haven't been able to put dowm a brew for 12 months but i'm still drinking well kept beer from over two years ago in champers bottles.

Yeah, got pissy and drank two of the 'sugar monsters' by mistakeon two occasions. Bloody thing tastes great + very very potent.

Guess I'll have to put on my ninja suit and go looking on recycling night.

edit: Unless theres anyone in Perth who wants say 700 bottles, and I'll take 180 of them ? :D

How many dya want? I am well and truly over bottling, but cant bear to throw away the empties when Mrs GL knocks off a box of bubbly. You can have a few crates worth off me if its enough. Also there are a bunch that come filled with bonus ginger beer that Mrs GL didnt like.

Let me know.
