hey people
can any one tell me ? if you could brew in a jerry ?if you make a hole for a airlock in the lid can you do it coz i was thinking about space and i reckon i could put 4 jerrys in my fermenter fridge so i can do 4 batches at a time and then cold condition 4 batches at the same time :beerbang: :beerbang: :beerbang:

No reason why not, may have to limit batch size as Jerry's are 20L I think, so headspace for krausen would need to be taken into account.. Use 32L fermenters for 23L brews here.

I did it years ago , drilled a hole in the top of the handle for the airlock.

Worked well, watch your yeasts, nothing too active

im planning on doing this with two of mine and fitting check valves ive bought. this is tomorrows job

Cleaning the krausen ring (rectangle) could be a pain. I think the jerry come in 25L as well.

I have several plastic fermenters. Once finished with the brewing side of things, the easiest way I've found to clean them is to give a basic rinse and then fill with warm water with two tablespoons of pink stain (PSR, Neo Pink, or whatever) and let soak overnight. All the crud is removed and the fermenters are left "whiter than white." All that is left is to give a good rinsing.

Others may have different ideas and opinions, I just expressing what works for me.

I have the 25L jerry cans. They are 25L to a mark on the side so all up more like 28/30L I agree with cleaning may be hard, but as already mentioned the napisan overnight.

I have a few of these that I use as both Primary and Secondary fermenters - it's easier for me to fit one of these and a 30L round fermenter in my fridge.

To clean, I rinse it, then fill with water and a scoop of no-name NapiSan. Just leave it for a period (sometimes a couple of houres, sometimes a day) till it shifts the gunk.

Cleaning is not as bad as it looks , you do get dry krausen up in the handle.

As Steve said soak with napisan or bleach overnight, lay the jerry down so it gets in the handle.

Well worth the trouble if you can fit more fermenters into your fridge.

I do all my brewing in 25 litre square drums. once you get used to cleaning as others have mentioned it's easy. great to store/carry etc. No problems sealing the lid. Drill a 12mm hole on the lid, fit a grommet and an airlock, get some spare lids, they will be handy. Cheers 15BL

sounds the way to go space and brewing and conditioning wise im sold where do you buy these square drums or jerry cans and do you guys have pics of them

Man, i find it tough enough brewing in the garage ! :p

Hi Linz,

A lot of the cubes have a tap thread in them with a bung. All you have to do is remove the bung and drill the hole out as they are usually undrilled.

Hi Stoutman,

Most HBS will have the cubes (plastic jerrys) as well as the other places mentioned above. My cubes neatly fit a 43-48mm bung and airlock so no need to drill a hole for the airlock. Would post you a pic but my camera's bung, excuse the pun.

Cheers
PP

These ones have the bung in them, but I havn't removed for taps as the space in the fridge is limited and wouldn't fit with them in. The bung hole are at the back so you can't see them in the pic :beerbang:
