Hi there,

Forgot to buy some finings when I was the HB shop. I do have a container of normal edible geletine in powder form that I use to cook / make jelly.

Do you think it would OK to use a teaspoon of that dissolved in hot water as a clearing agent? Any problems / side effects?

I'm assuming it's the same thing?

Let me know your thoughts.

John.

Its what most people use. I think the brand I have used in the past is Mackenzies?

Have a quick read through here mate... should be able to clear thing s up for you (honestly no pun intended)

John,

I've been using normal edible gelatine as finings for a few years - the mckenzies one. Someone on this forum told me that the sachets of finings are just gelatine anyway. The other option is agar which I have never tried but which is an alternative for vegetarians.

+1 for the post from pocket-beers. In saying all that above, I am also not really convinced that it is as effective as a good crash chill. So much so that I have stopped using it and am achieving a better result with a lot less residue in the bottom of my bottles.

As I've posted on the other thread both bottles ended up crystal clear - will re-do the test with a US-05 brew currently under way.
