Is there any reason you couldn't use a cake rack with the legs shortened slightly in a Crown urn to keep the bag off the bottom?
I'm looking into doing some stepped mashes and want to be able to stir the mash in the bag while ramping the temperature.

As long as you keep stirring should be ok.
i used a similiar set up for a while, got sick of stirring but otherwise worked fine

That's what i do for BIAB when ramping. Just keep stirring/pumping to even out the temps amongst all the mash.

I use a stainless steel collander which does the same thing - works well and enables a good mash pumping when heating to mash out temps without burning or melting the bag. I have a small line attached to it so can remove it for the boil.

What do you use for the line?

Just a small piece of nylon type garden twine. Tie to collender handel and drap over urn and outside of insulation.

If you look closely at the pic you can see a small red line just to the right of the urn tap.
