Awesome Mike. Does it have the *************? :) A good SNPA or SN Porter clone?

Didn't see a couple of those but there is a SNPA!

Or you could just go straight to the source the Sierra Nevada website, they have the ingredients for all their beers, and I find that most of these books are not even close most of the time.

That's right, you gotta check whether the recipes actually reflect the ingredients from the website. Most SNPA clone recipes i've seen are using Amarillo or some other incorrect hop, which is why i said "Good SNPA recipe" as opposed to unauthentic one. A real recipe must only have Magnum/Perle, Cascade and Ale malt with a bit of medium crystal.

I'm not sure if you've seen it, but there's a SNPA clone here. The head brewer at SNPA apparently helped the homebrewer who posted this to get the recipe right.

BYO recipes are usually pretty good, they have been tested. ..but we are talking about making a homebrewed clone and whilst knowing what ingredients a commercial brewery uses is helpful will not always yeild a "clone" of the beer they make. These recipes have been tweaked for the homebrewer, suggesting ingredients which are available to home brewers.
We are never going to be using US 2 row pale malt in Oz so there goes your SNPA clone already! In some cases the ingredient list is all available locally and its those recipes I will probably try first.

Whoa, that's got a lot of crystal in it! Interesting that the Perle is at 30 mins too - i would have expected 60 mins.

I wouldn't go trying to get US 2-row for the sake of accuracy, i think it's more the hop flavour that's important in SNPA. I didn't mean to start a war  Aussie crystal might not have the right flavour - i think that the Weyermann Caramunich III should be about the right colour and should give that nice toastiness that SNPA has.

Note that this recipe is at 65% efficiency, it's probably safe to drop the grain amounts by 15% for 75% efficiency.

I might as well quote it (brackets are METRIC/celsius bloody US units!):

Here's my final cut based on info from the brewery. The crsytal 60 seems high but thats what the recipe calls for to get to 12 SRM. I may have to vary the hop additions just a bit depending on the alpha acid percentage. I'll be brewing this next weekend (hopefully). I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

Here it is:

i got my copy last week but still havent had a good chance to look through it. All the recipe's are Extract are they not...?

BYO recipes are usually pretty good, they have been tested. ..
I agree. In the SABSOSA comp I got 2 first places and 2 second places and all four recipes were from BYO recipes.

They were:
Newcastle Brown Ale (actually had to make two separate brews and then blend them)
Young's Special London Ale
Russian Imperial stout
Some American Amber ale recipe - the words Sail & Anchor comes to mind (mine was entered as a brown ale due to some darker malts used)

I have also made a Young's Double Chocolate Stout clone and in a side by side test with the real thing I thought it was pretty close.

One thing I would recommend though with BYO recipes is that when you see a recipe in the latest issue, wait until the next issue to see if there are any errors in quantities, times etc. The loyal readers always seem to jump on them in the letters to the editor section. As mentioned also, the efficiency for each recipe is set at a generous 65% which is helpful to newer AG brewers like me.

Cheers

A mix of both kinds of recipes with the grain alternative always given

Hopsta - Yep Borders have it, usually near there wine and other drinkies section. They charge about $15 though!

Hopsta,
Yes, i just was refering to my issue had arrived (subscription) and with it the Recipies.
Subscription is very cheap from memory. Kind of made me think how would they make money on it after postage
