Hey guys.

well this might be a stupid question. but as some of you might know im new to the brewing scene. iv put down 2 kit beers. 1 using a can of goo and some additives.

the last batch i did was dry malt extract with some maltrose in it ( i think ) and some pallet hops and a yeast. all provided by my LHBS.

after both these batches came out rather disspointint but drinkable iv decided to buy my ingrediants for my 3rd batch online.( as sugested on here)

now my problem.

with my last two batches i walked in the shop and stated i wanted to buy some beer he asked me what type i gave him a answer and he gave me ingrediants.

online i have NFI what im looking for.

i have read abit more on howtobrew.com and are goin to follow his instructions on making a extract beer.

i know i will need some kind of malt either LME or DME some hops and yeast but thats about as far as iv ventured into the recipe side of brewing. ( iv been more studying equipment and processes.)

So any help would be greatly appreciated.

i was after a beer easy to drink not to dark. something like a pale ale, though i am taking a big fancy to the pilsner atm ( not sure if thats out of my reach.)

Cheers guys

Mate if the fresh wort kits are within your budget give them a go.

It is probably the best beer you are going to get with the least effort.

There are plenty of types to choose from

vicelore,

Liquid malt extract or dry extract comes down to personal preference. I tended to use dry as I found it easier to work with.

It might also be worth getting a little glucose/dextrose to go with the malt extract. I found using all extract my beers were a little cloying in taste.

Hops Pretty much up to you. Get a few varieties, perhaps some Amarillo / Cascade for an American Pale Ale.

Yeast Give US-05 a go. Its dry so its nice and simple and its also neutral which will allow the hop flavours to shine through.

Dont worry if it all seems a bit daunting, it doesnt take long before it all starts to make sense.

thanks guys.

Jerry thats the exact type of info im after. i never really understood why you needed to add Dextrose sugar to brews but if its to make the beer less cloying then iv just learned somehting lol..

love to hear more guys.

Cheers

Yeah, keep it simple until you get a handle on what works and how to make more complex recipes. Pale Ale is nice and easy, and as suggested the dry yeasts will save you a lot of hassle initially. Simple Pale Ale recipes are everywhere here.

The malt extracts are typically not that fermentable; making the final beer cloying, so the dextrose would balance it up a bit as it ferments completely, making the beer a bit dryer.

Don't be too heavy-handed with the dextrose or you'll get cidery, fizzy beer-ade. I would have thought something like 10% is the amount to make it about right.

As far as suppliers are concerned, I can recommend Grain & Grape. Pretty good selection and postage; as you're in Vic. Even better if you can walk in there as they know their stuff.
