Hi Guys,

I am in Brisbane (well Ipswich really) for the next two weeks on a work trip and i was wondering if any of you Brisbanites might be able to suggest some locations / activities for me. I havent really been to Brisbane before, and i will be here for a couple of weeks, so I am looking for any suggestions. I will be in Ipswich during the week, but have a hire car, and can go for a trek in the afternoon / evenings during the week, and i have a hotel in the city over the weekend.

I have heard you can see the city via boat? Any micros in the area? What about good pubs in Brissy?

May go for a drive up the gold coast on the weekend pending any other brainwaves.

Cheers guys.

Jeremy

The German Club at the Gabba has pretty good selection - if you like German beers that is.

Belgium Beer Cafe in Edward St is pretty good. beerscan be exxy but they are beers you woun't get many other places

Also the Grand Central at Central Railway station in Ann St has a good selection.

Have'nt been there my self but the Storey Bridge Hotel (Kangaroo Point) is supposed to be good also.

Hope you have a great trip

If you are heading in the direction of Toowoomba - give the Spotted Cow Hotel a go in Ruthven St. You will definietly need to stay overnight or have a driver.

Burleigh Brewing down at Burleigh on the Gold Coast is open every Sat 2 - 6pm for drinks - some great beers (may be biased!) and Brennan really knows his stuff.

Sadly, The Brew House has just closed. :( Was a great venue and I hope Brendan and the guys find a nice, shiny new venue soon!

Grand Central in the city usually has a nice range, as does the Belgium Beer Cafe in Edward St.

And you should at least make the trip down to visit, Ross, Anthony and Josh at Craftbrewer, about 20 - 25 mins from the city :)

Oh, and there's the MT brewery in Mt. Tambourine which isn't open as yet, but PM Ian Watson (Beersom on here) and he may be able to tee up a session for you!

And I'm sure some of the local lads would be more than happy to have you round for a brew or six.... Alternatively I'm sure many of us would be up for a trek to the city over the next couple of weeks for a beer with you!!

Cheers

edit: Beaten by....well....everybody! :)

Go South..

NSW has daylight saving.... means you get in more drinking time :icon_cheers:

If you don't get yourself "UP" to the Sunshine Coast for a beer with local brewers during the 2 weeks then your a prick

PM me I'll see if I can set something up, am away from 7th Oct unfortunately but some of the locals would surely join in a BPU>

Screwy

Or you could come around to my place for a beer! 2mins from the CBD. PM me if you are interested Jeremy.

cheers

Hey,

Thanks fellas, didn't expect the personal invites to houses and the like, i have never met up with another ahb member in my own state! A bit quiet on the forum as i am here for work and cant use the internet at my hotel.

I will definately try to make time to visit Ross' shop. I have made many an order from there before, but to be honest i didnt even know there was a physical store until yesterday! Not sure what my plans are as yet, but if i get some time in the afternoon later in the week i might send out some PMs.

Thanks for all the pub suggestions, i will compile a bit of a list. As my lady friend will be up over the weekend i dont know how keen she will be for house visits, but i shall try my luck!

Cheers,

Jeremy

Water cruise: The ferry service using fast catamarans (CityCat) is cheap - it's public transport - and goes up and down the river from the University of Queensland down to Hamilton near the river mouth and there are some spectacular sections past the CBD and under the Story Bridge etc. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip. The ticket is a daily so you can break your trip at the Riverside Precinct (North Bank of the CBD) and have a pint of hand pumped Wells Bombardier at the Pig n Whistle.

Fortitude Valley (Chinatown, nightclubs, pole dancing establishments) also has Saturday Markets and the Elephant & Wheelbarrow which usually has a couple of British Ales and a German or two.

Sadly the microbrewery scene is stuffed since the Brew House closed but there's a small brewery on the Sunshine Coast at Kunda Park - don't know what the sampling arrangements are but S.C. members will be able to fill you in on that.

Also, when it comes to first impressions don't be put off by Ipswich, it's sort of the equivalent of some of Northern Adelaide's less salubrious suburbs but has some interesting history and architecture (edit: and of course many fine citizens and home brewers who wouldn't live anywhere else :p ). (double edit, I live in the Caboolture area so not knocking Ipswich per se ;) ) If you've got a hire car and are out that way, why not go for a run up the ranges to Cunningham's Gap and even up to the Granite Belt / wineries ???

in that thing they call the valley isnt it? (yes im not from qld, but pretty sure i've played at the E&W before.)

hey Bribie where is the elephant and wheelbarrow?

Short stagger from the station

Edit, short stroll from the station, slightly longer stagger back to the station. Get a Nambour Train with the toilets on board (stops at Petrie)

did they used to have a drum n bass night called rudebwoyz once a month there bribie?

I only haunt the place during daylight, but they have bands in the evening. Popular venue and has bouncers at night at weekends. Good bottlo as well. Upstairs is a backpackers full of Poms thus guaranteeing strong sales of UK beers to the homesick.

The "Pig & Whistle" on Eagle Street near the river is also worth a look.
