Hi, I'm doing a clone of Avery's New World Porter (an American brewery). The grain bill has 4.3kg of Briess pale malt, 1kg Munich and some Caraaroma, chocolate and black malts. The recipe wants it boiled for 90 mins, but I don't see the point for that grain bill. Any reason, other than to follow the clone recipe, that I need to boil that long?

Cheers

You don't have to. However so many good things happen in a boil that I recommend it.
Personally 90 is my default and even when I do 60, I let it boil for 15 before adding the first hops so minimum for me is 75 (max about 3 hrs but that's another story).

DMS is only one part of the picture.

I made a 1 hour 20min beer a few weeks back (about 15 minute boil). It turned out quite nice.
