Hi guys,

About to do my my first AG today with BIAB.

Is it still the case that the grain needs to be crushed finer than normal to get good efficiency?
If I ask the brew shop to mill it twice, is that ok?

I'm just not sure because i know a mashout improves efficiency.
I'm just not sure if the finer crush is also required.

cheers.

Tim

I've done plenty of BIAB's with grain crushed at the shop (slightly under crushed) and at home (insinkerator style, over crushed, lots of flour) and the difference in efficiency is a few % -

The main concern for a fine crush in conventional mash/lauter tun setups is a stuck mash... not something that bothers the BAIBers.

My advice - don't worry, just brew!

Yep, I wouldn't be worrying, fine or coarse- it doesn't really matter for BIAB, maybe just a few % difference. :icon_cheers:

I've never been overly concerned with efficiency. I'm not a brewery trying to maximize profits - otherwise I'd use sugar.

My efficiency is average at best, but at $2.20 a kg ... who cares?! :D
